Take a closer look at the history behind Martha's Vineyard's iconic Gingerbread Cottages.

This area of Oak Bluffs hosted a Methodist camp meeting, a type of outdoor service popular during the Second Great Awakening movement. This particular event was so popular that attendees looking to come back each year and stay longer on the island began to replace their tents with summer cottages. If you look closely at many of the structures, you may find elements that mimic features of large camping tents.

Today the neighborhood is a National Historic Landmark administered by the MVCMA - Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association, who offer waking tours that provide deeper insights into these beautiful structures.
