I always look forward to my hikes with Henry. We always have the greatest adventures, chats, and laughs. This trip was no different. We hiked the Colgate Lake Trail up to Dutchers Notch and beyond towards Arizona Mountain. 10 miles of beautiful scenery in the Colgate Lake Wild Forest.

See? There are no wolves in NY. Stop it.

See? There are no wolves in NY. Stop it.

Say hello to the Eastern coyote, also known as the coywolf. It looks like a coyote, howls like a wolf, and sneaks through cities like a furry ninja. But here’s the jaw-dropper: it’s not a pure species. It’s a hybrid.
That’s right. Eastern coyotes are actually a wild mashup of coyote, wolf, and even domestic dog DNA. Scientists believe this combo started around a hundred years ago, when coyotes from the West migrated east and started mixing with shrinking wolf populations in Canada. Add in a little bit of dog along the way, and boom. You get a stealthy, sharp-toothed super-canid.
These animals are bigger than your average western coyote, smarter thanks to wolf genes, and more adaptable because of that tiny bit of dog. They’re like the Swiss Army knife of predators.
And they’re taking over. From forests to suburbs, even sneaking into major cities like Boston and New York, these hybrid creatures are thriving. They’re not afraid of traffic, humans, or loud noises. They’ll eat anything from rabbits to pizza crusts.
They look wild, and they are, but here’s the twist. Coywolves are actually a recent example of evolution in real time. In just a few generations, nature mixed up a totally new, highly adaptable animal, one that’s figured out how to survive in a world full of humans.
And while the name “coywolf” sounds like a cryptid your cousin saw in the woods, this is real, confirmed by genetic testing and backed by researchers.
So if you ever spot a big “coyote” in your neighbourhood that seems just a little too confident, a little too bulky, maybe even a little too chill near your recycling bin…
You might’ve just had a run-in with nature’s remix. Half coyote. Part wolf. Little bit dog. Total boss. 🐾

What an amazing weekend spent with my lovely lady . Friday night we gave a kayak tour into Murderer's Creek with a cool group of folks through Air BnB. Then Saturday we had the pleasure of meeting a kindred spirit, Jill, and took her hiking around north lake and the southern eacarpment. After that, we hit the Governors Tavern in Hudson for some OG Chicken sandwiches. Sunday I introduced Barb to the wonders of Platte Clove and we beat the heat by swimming in the mist beautiful pools. I love weekends like this!
