Here's a fun seasonal flip. While we rake leaves, New Zealand is heading into spring, and its lodge season is just beginning.

Blanket Bay tops my list every time. The lodge looks across Lake Wakatipu to the Humboldt Mountains, scenery so cinematic the valleys nearby stood in for Middle-earth on screen, and Queenstown's restaurants and w**eries are only 45 minutes away.

The itinerary here runs on helicopters and rivers. Heli-fishing on water no road reaches, flyovers of Milford Sound, w**e tasting in Central Otago, or nothing at all in the great stone-and-timber lodge room with a fire going.

New Zealand takes long lead times, and planning now means the trip of a lifetime next year. Reach out!

Ask me where to stay in Napa, and I won’t even pause. Neither will most sommeliers and chefs, by the way. The answer is the same.

Auberge du Soleil began as a restaurant in 1981, on a Rutherford hillside covered in olive trees, and the rooms came later. The Michelin-starred restaurant remains the heart of the property, and the terrace looks straight down the valley over some of the most famous vineyards in America.

A few reasons clients return: the adults-focused calm, the hillside spa, and a location that puts you 10 minutes from more legendary tasting rooms than you could cover in a week.

Most Portugal trips head straight for the Algarve. My favorite itineraries go almost everywhere else.

Lisbon: the natural first stop, with hilltop viewpoints, a world-class food scene, and the fairytale palaces of Sintra a short drive away.

The Alentejo: cork forests, sprawling w**e estates, whitewashed villages, and some of the darkest night skies in Europe. This is Portugal at its slowest and most soulful.

Comporta: rice paddies running into pine-backed Atlantic beaches, barely an hour from Lisbon. The understated coast Europeans have kept to themselves for years.

The Douro Valley: terraced vineyards stacked above the river, tastings at historic quintas, and lodges with valley views that stop conversation.

Madeira: dramatic cliff walks along centuries-old levada trails, a surprisingly serious dining scene in Funchal, and spring-like weather nearly every month of the year.

Wherever Portugal takes you, I'll make sure it goes past the obvious. Let's start planning.

I plan winter trips from Aspen and Telluride to the Alps, so it means something when I say one of the world's great winter stays is in Canada.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise stands directly on the shore of its namesake lake in Banff National Park, facing the Victoria Glacier. No other hotel gets this position, and in winter it becomes something out of a storybook: the lake freezes into a skating rink framed by ice sculptures, horse-drawn sleighs trace the shoreline, and the mountains stay dusted in white for months.

Skiers are spoiled here too. Three resorts are within easy reach, including Lake Louise Ski Resort just minutes away, with some of the most scenic runs in North America and none of the lift lines you'd expect for terrain this good.

Advisor tip: Lakeview rooms are worth every penny, especially in winter when the frozen lake and glacier fill your window. They sell out first, so this is a book-early property. Message me to start planning.

Unpopular opinion from some people who plan travel for a living: your itinerary is probably too full.

The trips clients rave about years later are rarely the ones with the most stops. They're the ones with margin. One hotel for five nights instead of three hotels in six. An afternoon with nothing scheduled. Going back to the café you loved instead of hunting down a new one.

So when I build itineraries, I try to protect white space on purpose. Fewer transfers, longer stays, and room for the trip to surprise you. It takes discipline to leave things out. That's part of what you hire me for.

If your last vacation needed a vacation, let's do the next one differently.

Which cruise line is perfect for people who plan entire trips around meals? Easy answer.

Oceania built its identity on food. On its newest ships, there is one chef for every ten guests, specialty restaurants come at no extra charge, and a hands-on Culinary Center lets you cook your way across the itinerary with classes at sea. The newest ship, Allura, joined the fleet last summer, complete with a made-to-order crêperie and a glass-walled library I'd happily move into.

Travel + Leisure readers just voted this the best resort in Europe, and I could not agree more.

Castiglion del Bosco, a Rosewood hotel on a 5,000-acre estate in Montalcino, took the top resort spot in Europe in this year's World's Best Awards with a near-perfect score. Add two Michelin stars at Ristorante Campo del Drago, three Michelin Keys, and an estate w**ery producing its own Brunello di Montalcino, and the case pretty much makes itself.

Golfers, save this part. The estate is home to the only private golf club in Italy, a Tom Weiskopf-designed 18-hole course that hotel guests can actually play. Expect Val d'Orcia views on every hole and almost no one else on the course.

My shortlist of the world's most iconic wildlife experiences. All bookable, all better in person.

The Great Migration in Tanzania and Kenya, timed to the Mara River crossings. Mountain gorillas in Rwanda, an hour face-to-face that clients call life-changing. Bengal tigers in India's national parks. Elephants crossing the water in Botswana's Okavango Delta. Polar bears on the tundra in Churchill, Canada. Penguin colonies by the hundred thousand in Antarctica.

Every one of these is seasonal, and the best camps, permits, and guides go a year or more out. The earlier you raise your hand, the better your odds of the sighting you came for.

Yes, I know you're asking AI about your next trip. Honestly? Keep doing it.

AI is useful early on: gathering ideas, comparing regions, figuring out what kind of trip you're actually in the mood for, drafting the packing list. Bring me all of it. A client who arrives with a screenshot of ideas gives me a head start I love.

Here's where the handoff happens: AI hasn't slept in the rooms. It doesn't know the hotel changed hands last year, which room category is worth the jump, or that the famous restaurant is coasting. Quick question. When photos like these stop your scroll, where does your mind go?
