✦ TRUE NORTH | The long way home
My flight from Toronto to St. Louis was canceled for a mechanical issue, and the trip home became more than 40 hours: Athens, Toronto, Montreal, Chicago and finally St. Louis. No hotel rooms in Toronto or Montreal, so no sleep either.

My True North: Smiling under the Welcome to St. Louis sign with my travel companion. We were freezing in the Montreal airport without our luggage, so we bought these sweatshirts to remember the final, unexpected country on our trip: Canada. I think we look pretty good for what we had endured.

FIELD NOTE: Expect the unexpected. When travel goes sideways, be nice to the airline people who are trying to help you. You'll get further being nice than angry, and it's not their fault the plane had a mechanical issue or the weather is bad.

✦ TRUE NORTH | Corinth & the Acropolis
Our last full day. We started at the Corinth Canal, a narrow channel cut straight through the rock, which is even more dramatic in person. Ancient Corinth was once one of the richest cities in Greece, and its Temple of Apollo has been standing for about 2,500 years. Paul spent a year and a half here. Then back to Athens and up to the Acropolis, the view everyone pictures when they think of Greece.

My True North: As our trip wound down, I was so grateful for the experiences we shared with our fellow travelers. Even though this was a “work trip,” my cup is full from the new friendships.

FIELD NOTE: Just below the Acropolis is Mars Hill, the rocky outcrop where Paul spoke to the Athenians. It’s an easy climb with a great view of the Acropolis. Wear shoes with good grip, because the rock has been polished slick by centuries of footsteps.
