The Southern Greater Kudu. There are antelope you hunt because they are impressive. And then there is the GREY GHOST. He doesn’t need to announce himself. He steps out of the mopane shadows like something the African bush built specifically to test a hunter’s nerve. Massive shoulders. Long, powerful legs. A charcoal gray hide marked with those unmistakable white stripes. And above it all, a set of horns that spiral toward the sky like twisted pieces of the African wilderness itself. A mature bull can carry horns stretching well beyond 50 inches, and for a few lucky bastards 60 inches and beyond, but inches don’t tell the whole story. It’s the mass, the symmetry, the sweep of those spirals and the way a big bull can disappear into country you swear couldn’t hide a rabbit that makes the kudu such a coveted prize. They are ghosts with hooves. Kudu live in some of Africa’s roughest country. Thick thorn, broken ridges, riverine bush and endless miles of mopane. They are remarkably agile for their size, capable of clearing obstacles with shocking ease. And when a bull decides he’s had enough of you, he doesn’t run like a deer. He vanishes. That’s what makes hunting a big kudu bull so addictive. You can glass for hours without seeing one. You can walk within yards of him without knowing he’s there. Then, for one heartbeat, the bush parts and there he stands. Big. Old. Wary. And carrying the kind of horns that make a hunter forget every other animal in the valley. The southern greater kudu isn’t Africa’s most dangerous animal. It doesn’t have to be. Some animals earn respect through violence. The kudu earns it through survival. A true old bull has spent years learning how to disappear in a country that was never meant to give up its secrets. And when you finally get a look at him, you understand exactly why hunters call the kudu the Grey Ghost of Africa.

Big congrats to Kevin West on this Zambian Croc. Measured out slightly over 13.5 feet. A few of the locals seemed to think this might be the one that unfortunately gotten ahold of other villagers over the years. These prehistoric dino lizards are impressive and dangerous. Fantastic croc!

ZAMBIA bound on one of our annual hosted trips. Why a hosted trip? Plenty of reasons! 1) you don’t like to travel alone 2) it’s your first time traveling to a new place 3) peace of mind traveling with someone that’s been there before 4) an extra set of hands to help make sure everything goes well door to door 5) it’s fun hunting with new friends! Whatever the reason, we are happy to host our clients to select locations throughout each year. We do this at no additional cost. We just love being out in the field as much as our clients.

61” 🤯 it’s better to be lucky than good. Eclipsing the magical 60” mark on a southern greater kudu is what are dreams are made of. I’ve watched fellow hunters pursue this feat for decades. Heard of PHs that hunt and work a lifetime to never even see one. Chris and I were pleasantly surprised. No ground shrinkage. He literally got bigger with every step we got closer to him. Hunt with the best to find the best. We live this stuff!

Still one of Africa’s greatest pursuits. You hunt lion with your heart. Hunting through conservation is vital to Africa’s wildlife and economy. Often misunderstood, but critically important nonetheless.
