We just changed our cover photo to this beautiful view of Lodestone Golf Club in McHenry, Maryland, in full fall color. Aspen built the course on a 285-acre mountaintop, designed by Hale Irwin and Todd Schoeder of Design Workshop, and it opened in 2010.

Early morning at Tribrook Club, mid-construction. Fog sits in the valleys and the mountains stack up in the distance, while the pond, bunkers and tee shaping take form in the foreground.

It’s a stage of a renovation that rarely gets photographed in good light: the ground is shaped, and you can read the whole property from the air before the grass fills in.

A hole gets built from the tee forward. Here’s a look at the tees on Holes 2, 3, and 11 at Tribrook Club while the work was underway: sod going down, raw dirt still showing, and the rest of each hole taking shape beyond them.

Some of the toughest work on a golf course renovation happens on the slopes nobody notices. At Hole 12, Tribrook Club, stabilization work kept this hillside from washing out before turf could take hold — not glamorous, and not something that shows up in anyone's highlight reel.

But it's the reason the rest of the hole can look the way it does once it's grown in: a clean fairway corridor leading up to the green, the slope beside it holding exactly where it needs to.
