A little piece of old Depoe Bay history! ❤️

I have been looking for this old photo forever, and I finally found it!

Believe it or not, this was once the gas station that stood where Tidal Raves sits today, overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean in Depoe Bay.

The building began its life as a gas station and later became a pizza parlor before beginning its next chapter as Tidal Raves.

Just look at that old Richfield sign and the view beyond it. So much has changed over the years, but that incredible view of the Pacific is still just as spectacular. 🌊

Photos like this are such a wonderful reminder of the history behind the places we know and love today.

🐙 The Historic Depoe Bay Aquarium

Built in 1927, the same year as the famous Depoe Bay Bridge, the Depoe Bay Aquarium was Oregon’s first saltwater aquarium and was once considered one of the best in the world.

Located just north of the bridge, the aquarium featured locally caught marine life, including octopuses, seals, wolf eels, colorful fish, crabs, sea stars, and much more. One of its most famous attractions was a giant octopus known as “Kid Octopus.”

After more than 70 years of welcoming visitors to Depoe Bay, the beloved aquarium closed its doors for the final time in 1998. 🌊🐙

🦀 It’s one of the best times of year to go crabbing on the Oregon Coast!

September through December are often considered some of the best months for crabbing, when Dungeness crab are typically well filled out with a higher percentage of meat.

A few Oregon crabbing tips:

🦀 Time it right: Try crabbing during slack water, around high or low tide, when currents are less active and crabs are more likely to be out looking for food.

🦀 Bait: Raw chicken legs and fish carcasses are popular choices.

🦀 Size & s*x: Dungeness crab must be male and at least 5¾ inches wide.

🦀 Daily limit: The limit is 12 male Dungeness crab per day per license holder.

🦀 License: A shellfish license is required for crabbers age 12 and older.

Always check the latest Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife regulations for current crabbing restrictions or closures before heading out.

The wait was a bit long in the middle of the dinner hour, as many guests picking up takeout orders kept the kitchen busy—but it was well worth it.

Both the regular Pad Thai and the house-special version with lemongrass-grilled chicken were excellent. The house peanut sauce was outstanding!”
