This picture shows crab island in the 1950s.

Crab Island was originally a man-made landmass created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Beginning in the 1930s and continuing through the 1960s, the Corps dredged the Destin East Pass to stabilize the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico for navigation. The massive volume of sand removed during this project was deposited into Choctawhatchee Bay, forming a "spoil island" that locals initially referred to as "Bird Island" due to the wildlife it attracted.

Over time, natural tidal currents and severe weather eroded the landmass. The defining transformation occurred in 1974 when Hurricane Eloise washed away the remaining sand above the waterline, permanently submerging the island. Today, Crab Island is no longer a true island but a massive, waist-deep sandbar. It has evolved into the famous drunken pontoon boat gathering spot where boaters anchor to enjoy the floating bars and taco stands.
