Most people know Harriet Tubman from the Underground Railroad — but did you know she also led one of the most brilliant military operations of the entire Civil War, right here along a South Carolina river? 🌊
On the night of June 1-2, 1863, Harriet Tubman served as a spy and guide for Union Colonel James Montgomery, leading three gunboats up the Combahee River using intelligence she had personally gathered about Confederate troop positions and torpedo placements in the water. The raid liberated more than 700 enslaved people in a single night, the largest single emancipation action in the entire war, and was carried out with a precision and daring that military historians still study today. Tubman had already spent months in the South Carolina Lowcountry gathering intelligence, learning the waterways, and building a network of Black informants essential to the Union's operations in the region.
This happened on South Carolina soil, led by one of the most remarkable human beings in American history. 🕊️ Did you know Harriet Tubman operated extensively in South Carolina? Tell us honestly, and tag someone who needs to know the full scope of what she did.

American alligators live in freshwater but will venture into saltwater to feed. This is a young, but mature gator trying to get more food than what he can access in his freshwater pond. He’s started visiting under the fish cleaning stations at the marina. Come down at low tide and you might be able to watch him feed. Keep your distance and don’t harass him.
