Welcome to the Basilica of San Crisogono in Trastevere. This part of the church with the Cosmati floors, the wooden ceiling, and the columns flanking each side was constructed in the 1100’s.
BUT WAIT, THERES MORE!!
➡️Walk to the back of the left side of the nave and find the small door saying “Sagrestia”
➡️Walk in and with a few euro offering, the deacon or priest will give you access to the underground church, the original version of the San Crisogono church built in the 5th century!

I wasn’t allowed to take photo’s down there, but it is an amazing excavation you need to see for yourself.

Italy celebrates 2 holidays on August 15th. The Feast of Mary’s Assumption into Heaven and Buon Ferragosto which traditionally celebrates both summer time with family and the holy event. I was blessed to see this magnificent piece by Fra Angelico (1430 AD) on exhibit in Florence celebrating the artist. 🥰 The detail not only of the painting (on wood) but also the engraving of the case is beyond magnificent. And to think this is before the high Renaissance. See my stories for the full view. All of his work is amazing!!!!
