Before there were roads into Montana, there was the Missouri River and Fort Benton was at the end of it.
In the 1860s, steamboats lined this levee for over a mile. Everything that built Montana Territory came off those ships. For two decades, Fort Benton was the most important port in the American Northwest. The nation’s innermost port. The gateway to everything west of St. Louis.
