Carlos brought a crew out last week for some WHACK EM AND STACK EMยฎ action, and the conditions weren't exactly doing us any favors.

Full moon.

No wind.

Weekend boat traffic.

And that ridiculous ๐†๐‡๐Ž๐’๐“ ๐๐ˆ๐“๐„ was still in full effect.

A couple of the guys were getting robbed so clean I was starting to think these fish had developed hands. ๐Ÿ˜‚

It took a little coaching to get everybody calibrated, but once they figured out that barely-there bite...

GAME ON.

They started slinging some really nice fish into the boat and put together the pile you see in these pictures.

But honestly, THAT wasn't what got my attention.

The fish had moved.

Different areas.

Different depths.

Places I haven't needed to spend much time in all summer.

There's a change in the weather coming, and those fish were already acting like they knew it.

After almost three decades of watching these fish transition from summer into fall, that's the stuff I pay attention to.

The calendar might say September...

But I think the catfish just told me themselves.

At least thatโ€™s what it felt like standing in a boat.

It was HOT.

The lake was slick as glass half the time, the fish developed that ridiculous ghost bite, and apparently every 8-inch catfish in Eagle Mountain Lake invited all his friends over for summer vacation.

And Saturdays?

Weโ€™re just going to leave Saturdays alone. ๐Ÿ˜‚

But somehow we kept finding fish.

Some days it was WHACK EM AND STACK EMยฎ from the first drop.

Other days we had to move, move again, cover half the lake and keep knocking on doors until somebody finally answered.

Looking back through these pictures, though, August was a heck of a month.

We had kids catch their first catfish.

People who had barely fished before figure out a hookset and start slinging fish over the rail.

Birthdays.

Families.

Old friends.

Repeat customers.

And several groups that had me laughing hard enough that my actual guiding duties were briefly interrupted. ๐Ÿ˜‚

A few climbed in my boat for the first time.

I appreciate every single one of you.

Seriously.

Thank you for trusting me with your families, your friends, your birthdays, your days off and your time on the water.

After hearing about their first fishing trip, I understood why they hired a professional for the second one. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Kioko and Erica joined me Friday, and they'd only been fishing once before.

I won't tell their whole story...

But apparently fishing trip #1 had enough problems that they decided fishing trip #2 needed adult supervision. ๐Ÿ˜‚

We started from scratch.

How to feel the bite. When to set the hook. How to get a fish in the boat.

And they picked it up FAST.

We had no wind, a full moon and another one of those ridiculous GHOST BITES where the fish were trying to eat without anybody finding out about it.

We weeded through a bunch of little fish, made a few moves looking for better ones and then...

WHACK EM AND STACK EMยฎ.

These two started slinging NICE fish into the boat.

And once they got comfortable, the commentary started too.

I don't know what was funnierโ€”the stuff coming out of their mouths or watching them figure out they could actually catch the heck out of some catfish.

They had me laughing so hard a couple times I had to stop what I was doing and regroup. ๐Ÿ˜‚

By the end of the morning, two ladies who had basically never fished before had put together one heck of a pile of catfish.

Fishing trip #1: Apparently a complete circus.

Fishing trip #2: WHACK EM AND STACK EMยฎ.

I'd say they're officially fishermen now.

That little โ€œtickโ€ was about to turn into complete chaos. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Steve brought a crew out Thursday for some WHACK EM AND STACK EMยฎ catfish action, and after being off the water a few days, we went right back to where I'd left them.

The fish were there.

Getting a hook in them was another story.

Full moon, slick water and that goofy August ghost bite where a catfish can somehow eat your bait without admitting he was ever there.

A couple of the guys took a little longer to figure it out.

Then it clicked.

And my morning went downhill FAST. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Fish started flying into the boat from every direction, these boys were slinging them faster than I could keep up, and it turned into nonstop action.

My flip-flops were smoking.

That's late-August catfishing.

The bite might be weird, but once you crack the code...

September is coming, the brutal August heat is finally on its way out, the summertime lake circus starts settling down, and some of my favorite catfishing of the entire year is right around the corner.

I found the best thing at the entire trade show.

Industrial air conditioning. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I had a couple days off the water last week and headed to Oklahoma City for some Whisker Seeker Tackle business at a big outdoor industry trade show.

After spending August cooking in a boat, I discovered our booth was DIRECTLY underneath a giant industrial AC vent.

I don't know who picked that booth location, but they deserve a raise.

I enjoyed every last second of it. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Had a great couple days talking with tackle shops from all over the country, catching up with friends in the fishing industry, and checking out everything from fishing and hunting gear to fi****ms.

Basically a building full of things I can convince myself I need.

Matt and his son joined me Sunday for some catch-and-release catfish action, and Mother Nature served up pretty much a repeat of the previous few days.

Slick water.

LOTS of boat traffic.

Light and variable winds.

And that dang GHOST BITE was still hanging around. ๐Ÿ‘ป

The fish were there, but the bite was SUPER light and they made us work for every one.

Weโ€™d pull into an area, catch a handful, then the little ones would move in.

Time to go.

STICK AND MOVE.

Catch a few. Move.

Find another group. Catch a few more.

Move again.

Thatโ€™s when I just put my head down and did what I doโ€”WENT TO WORK.

I hustled all trip to keep Matt and his son around active fish, and that hustle paid off with steady, nonstop action the entire trip.

They didnโ€™t make it easy on us, but we kept rods bending and fish coming over the side.

Some days you WHACK โ€™EM AND STACK โ€™EMยฎ in one spot.

Other days youโ€™ve gotta go hunt โ€™em down.

SATURDAY STARTED WITH A GHOST BITEโ€ฆ AND ENDED WITH BAGS OF FILLETS. ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Tory and Gerrick joined me Saturday for some North Texas catfish action, and when we hit the water the lake was SLICK AS GLASS.

No wind.

Boat traffic was about the worst Iโ€™ve seen all summer.

I took one look around and knew exactly what we were dealing withโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ‘ป GHOST BITE TIME.

We got into fish FAST, but getting hooks in โ€™em was another story. We had a few hookset issues early, but once I got everybody coached up and we made a couple movesโ€ฆ

WHACK EM AND STACK EMยฎ TIME!

By the end of the trip, we came in just a few fish shy of a two-man limit and Tory and Gerrick headed home with some NICE bags of fresh catfish fillets.

And let me tell youโ€ฆ

It was SURE NUFF HOT out there. ๐Ÿฅต

But this heat is going to break soonโ€”and when it does, those catfish are going to be HANGRY.

The bite really starts kicking into overdrive, and we typically start seeing the quality of fish go WAY UP too.

Best part?

Iโ€™ve got a BUNCH of September dates open.

Cooler weather. Hungry catfish. Bent rods.

FRIDAY WAS A STRAIGHT-UP CATFISH BEATDOWN. ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿ”ฅ

After moving my daughter back to Texas Tech and having the boat down for maintenance for a few days, it sure felt good to get back on the water Fridayโ€”even if North Texas was trying to cook us alive. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I had Bob and Dirk with me for some catch-and-release catfish action.

Bob is a white bass guide down in Central Texas and came up wanting to learn more about how I target catfish during the summer so he could take some of those techniques back and apply them on his home lakes.

Dirk? Well, Dirk casually owns a little olโ€™ BBQ joint in Central Texas called Millerโ€™s Smokehouse.

What he DIDNโ€™T casually mention was that Millerโ€™s is one of the Texas Top 50 BBQ joints. If you know Texas BBQ, you know THATโ€™S A BIG DEAL.

As for the fishingโ€ฆ

WE CAUGHT WELL OVER 100 CATFISH IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.

We had to fight through plenty of smaller fish, and the GHOST BITE was in FULL EFFECT. ๐Ÿ‘ป

But we kept after โ€™em, figured โ€™em out, and eventuallyโ€ฆ

WHACKED โ€™EM AND STACKED โ€™EMยฎ

And mixed in with all that action were some DANG NICE FISH.

Great day. Great company. Lots of fish caught and releasedโ€”and hopefully Bob went home with a few new tricks up his sleeve.

Now somebody PLEASE turn the thermostat down outside.
