May 1864. Right here in Fredericksburg.

These photographs capture one of the city’s Civil War hospitals, now home to Amy Hendee .

After the Battle of Spotsylvania, thousands of wounded soldiers poured into Fredericksburg, transforming homes, churches, and businesses into makeshift hospitals. The scenes captured here were part of daily life.

Among the volunteers was Abby Hopper Gibbons, a 62-year-old Quaker abolitionist and humanitarian believed to be the oldest female volunteer serving the wounded in Fredericksburg. She arrived with her recently widowed daughter and immediately began caring for soldiers under unimaginable conditions.

Today, it’s incredible to see this historic building begin another chapter as Amy Hendee . We love seeing Fredericksburg’s historic spaces preserved and filled with new life.

👻 If you’ve taken one of our History Walks or Ghost Tours, you’ve already heard some of the stories connected to this property. We’re excited to announce we’ll be partnering with Amy Hendee this Halloween for something we’ve never done before…

In the meantime, stop by, give them a follow, and mention this post when you visit!

History never really leaves Fredericksburg—it simply finds a new purpose.

Memorial Day in Fredericksburg means more than a long weekend.

This city is no stranger to sacrifice. From the Revolutionary War, to World War II, to modern conflicts — generations of Americans connected to this community have answered the call, served, and given everything for a cause greater than themselves.

Today, we remember them. The known names etched into monuments, and the countless others whose stories quietly shaped this town and this country.

As a veteran-owned business, we understand that freedom has always come with a cost — and Fredericksburg’s streets still carry the echoes of that sacrifice.

Today we honor those who never made it home. 🇺🇸
