Memorial Day in Fredericksburg means more than a long weekend.

This city is no stranger to sacrifice. From the Revolutionary War, to World War II, to modern conflicts — generations of Americans connected to this community have answered the call, served, and given everything for a cause greater than themselves.

Today, we remember them. The known names etched into monuments, and the countless others whose stories quietly shaped this town and this country.

As a veteran-owned business, we understand that freedom has always come with a cost — and Fredericksburg’s streets still carry the echoes of that sacrifice.

Today we honor those who never made it home. 🇺🇸

Before the University of Mary Washington… there was another college shaping Fredericksburg’s future.

Founded in 1893, Fredericksburg College grew out of a Presbyterian orphan asylum, evolving into a co-educational institution offering everything from liberal arts to music, business, and physical culture. At its peak, nearly 200 students walked these grounds—studying, performing, and competing in sports.

The college stood near today’s intersection of Lewis Street and Prince Edward Street, placing it right in the heart of what is now a quiet residential part of Fredericksburg.

The school even built a reputation on the field. In 1901, its football team went undefeated and unscored on. But the sport wasn’t without danger—a 1911 game tragically resulted in a player’s death, later reported by The Free Lance-Star.

The campus itself blended history upon history. Classes were held in the Chew House, originally built in 1796, while dormitories occupied buildings dating back to the early 1800s.

Despite strong local support—including city-issued bonds to fund scholarships—the college struggled financially. By 1914, it closed its doors, in part due to competition from the newly established state normal school… what we now know as the University of Mary Washington.

Today, little remains—but its story is still woven into the fabric of the city.

Before Fredericksburg was what it is today… women were already helping run it.

Long before became co-ed, it was founded as Mary Washington College—an all-women’s college. And during World War II, those students didn’t just sit on the sidelines.

They stepped up.

📍 They marched through downtown Fredericksburg in uniform, promoting war bonds.
📍 They directed traffic during emergencies like the 1942 flood.
📍 They trained for civil defense—ready to support the city if crisis hit close to home.

At a time when the world was at war, these women became part of the backbone of Fredericksburg—keeping things moving, keeping people safe, and proving that leadership doesn’t wait for permission.

This is just one chapter in a much bigger story:
Women have shaped Fredericksburg at every level—quietly, consistently, and powerfully.

And their impact is still felt today.
