Weâre excited to celebrate the Dimmitt Building, 719 S Main Street, as the newest recipient of the Georgetown Main Street Sign & Façade Grant! The recent repainting has given this historic downtown landmark a fresh new look, with the buildingâs intricate architectural details really popping against the updated exterior.
Located on the historic Square, the Dimmitt Building is one of Georgetownâs most distinctive Victorian commercial buildings. Built in 1894, the building creatively combines hand-hewn limestone with cast iron and pressed metal details--including its beautifully preserved Mesker Brothers architectural ironwork. Based out of St. Louis, Mesker Brothers was one of the major manufacturers of prefabricated architectural iron and steel components in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These decorative building elements were manufactured and shipped to communities across the country.
Over the years, the building has been home to a wide variety of businesses. The ground floor, originally divided into two storefronts, has housed everything from a hardware store, drugstore, bookstore and stationery shop to a shoe company, harness shop and tailor. The second floor has served as office space, a residence and even served as Georgetownâs telephone exchange in 1910. And some of you may remember more recent chapters of its story, when Montgomery Ward occupied the building in the 1980s.
