Betty’s Country Store in the mountain town of Helen, Georgia, has been a local favorite since 1973 and remains one of the state’s most beloved landmarks. What began as an 800-square-foot country store has grown into a full supermarket while keeping its small-town, old-fashioned charm. A vintage tractor welcomes you out front, and inside you’ll find shelves lined with moon pies, RC Cola, glass-bottled sodas, an old-fashioned candy counter, and jars of cookies, jams, jellies, and syrups. The store also offers fresh-cut meats, a deli, beer, wine, and everyday groceries. Outside, a small bar area lets you relax with a cold drink and enjoy the views of this charming Bavarian-style town in the North Georgia Mountains.

The Old Sautee Store, Georgia’s oldest continuously operating general store, has been welcoming visitors since 1872. Nestled in the scenic Nacoochee Valley near Helen, it’s a true step back in time. The front room remains exactly as it was in the late 1800s, with original shelves, counters, and antique goods displayed just as they would’ve been more than a century ago. Beyond this museum-like space, you’ll find Scandinavian sweaters, locally made jams and honey, old-world candies, handmade soaps, and Baltic amber jewelry. Sample their famous Swedish Farmer Cheese, then pop into the neighboring Old Sautee Deli & Bakery for fresh sandwiches, cookies, and glass-bottled sodas...a living piece of Georgia mountain history!

Our Story

Abundant shopping, art galleries, wineries, traditional German dishes and international fare: This is Helen, White County and the surrounding villages of Sautee and Nacoochee, where Appalachia meets Alpine, a North Georgia beauty with a Bavarian sensibility, alongside the Chattahoochee River. Tour the strasses and platzes of the Alpine Village in a horse-drawn carriage. Georgia's Official Outdoor Adventure Destination offers something for everyone from golf courses to hiking, mountain biking, fishing and tubing, plus rock climbing, zip lining and horseback riding, too. Culinary and culture vultures delight in Helen's variety of wineries and breweries, her eclectic dining landscape, mountaintop spa and her accomplished artisans--quilters, woodcarvers, potters, glass artists. Shoppers are enchanted by a streetscape and bustle with activity: like-minded souls browsing more than 150 shops, horse-drawn carriages, German music--even a babbling brook--and all in down-home ambiance. Lodging includes in-town hotels, riverside bed and breakfast inns and cabins, condos and chalets tucked into the mountains. HelenGA.org
