There are apples growing in Hendersonville, NC with names you've never heard, and you get one afternoon a week to pick them.

Creasman Farms opens its u-pick orchard on Sundays only, one to five, through September and October. Miss it and you wait a week.

Summer Rambo, Shenshu, Mutsu and York grow right alongside the Honeycrisp and Pink Lady you actually came for. They keep more than forty varieties of heirloom and new apples going.

There's fresh-pressed cider and Momma C's pies, plus a picnic area and a food truck on some Sundays.

When was the last time you climbed a tree?

Three places around Hendersonville, NC will let you sleep in one.

Cold Spring Basecamp started from a family dream — a creek running through the property, waterfalls within walking distance, and cabins built so you sleep up in the canopy. Dogs welcome.

Tuxedo Falls took shape down in a gorge in Zirconia — treehouses carried by living trunks rather than perched in the branches, soaking tubs out on the decks, pottery from local makers inside.

Edenwood asks you to stop — a ridge above the Etowah Valley, no screens, no background noise, a cedar wood-fired hot tub.

The color comes down the mountain through October. Pick the stay first, then pick the week.

Fall color starts at the top of the mountain and takes about six weeks to reach town. Which is the argument for planning now.

🟢Late September — 6,000 feet and up. Graveyard Fields and Mount Mitchell go first.
🟡Early to mid-October — 4,000 feet and up. Mount Pisgah, Black Balsam Ridge.
🍂Mid-October — 3,000 to 4,000 feet. DuPont State Recreational Forest.
🍁Late October — 2,000 to 3,000 feet. Downtown Hendersonville, NC and the orchards hit their stretch.
🔴Early November — the lowest foothills finish it out.

Every Blue Ridge Parkway segment near town is open, so the high country is back within reach for a day trip.

Come once, and you'll catch one week of it. Come twice, and you'll see two different mountains.

U-pick apples in Hendersonville, NC, from a family that has worked this mountain since 1967.

Margaret is the third generation at Sky Top Orchard. Her grandfather and her father started it; she's the one up there now.

"We have a sample station, and we encourage guests to sample the varieties before they go out and pick."

That's the part worth knowing before you drive up. You taste them first, then you pick — so you leave with the one you actually like rather than the one you've heard of. And it matters: what's ready in August isn't what's ready in October, and the trees turn over week by week.

They press the cider on site, too.

Book through their calendar before you go — walk-ups get in while supplies last. Open daily, 9 to 5, through the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

Going to The North Carolina Apple Festival?

For four days, Main Street stops being a street. Growers come down out of the orchards with the season's fruit, the road closes to cars, and everything Henderson County grew this year ends up in downtown Hendersonville, NC.

Here's what you need to know 👇

🍎 Parking — the 5th Avenue West deck runs $10 a day and takes cards only, no cash. Enter at the Church Street gate, exit at 5th Avenue. City surface lots stay open as usual.

🍎 Accessible parking — City Hall lot, 160 6th Avenue East, Saturday through Monday.

🍎 Getting downtown — Main Street closes to cars between Caswell and 7th Avenue through Monday, until cleanup wraps after the parade. No parking on Main after 2 p.m.

🍎 Bikes — bike parking waits at the Ecusta Trail end of Main, small fee, Friday and Saturday.

🍎 Leave at home — drones, skateboards and bikes aren't allowed inside the festival footprint. Non-service animals are discouraged.

🍎 Hours — the street fair opens Friday at 10 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 10:30 in front of the Historic Courthouse. Friday, Saturday and Sunday run to 9:30 p.m. Monday runs until the parade ends.

🍎 King Apple Parade — Monday at 2:30 p.m. Viewing runs along Main from 5 Points to Kanuga/Caswell.
