Tip of the day. If your fish runs to the reef and gets caught, slack your line as fast as possible. Taking the pressure off allows the fish to calm down and put less force on the line. Once the line is clear you can fight the fish again. This technique works time and time again. Even when the fish go over@the edge.

Sometimes the pole comes apart. Relax it’s not the end of the world. If you know the strength of your leader and the hook, then you know how much pressure you can keep on the fish. I’ve hooked double digit bonefish with the pole falling apart and was able to recover. Unless you’re trying to get a record on the fly keep it simple and go heavy on the leader. The fish don’t care about the thickness of the leader. The difference between 25 and 15 in diameter isn’t a lot. As long as the fly is presented correctly the leader size doesn’t matter. However if you are using lighter flies, then you will want to use lighter leader strength so your fly swims properly. Presentation is everything. My leader is set up in three segments starting at 40lb test x 5 foot, 30 lb test x 4 foot, 25 lb test x 3 foot to equal 12 foot. Tie a perfection loop to the fly and to the fly line and you’re good. Stay away from nail nots! Nail nots and some of the new fly lines will not work. I’ve seeing nail nots fail too many times for it to be worth it. You have to have a strong hook. The carp hooks are the best. Keep it simple. If you are not catching bonefish because you think your leader is to big, maybe it is the presentation.
