Hundred different poses with fish. The Hawaiian Bonefish are big and solid. Our guy Parker from Alaska, currently attending the university of Hawaii at Hilo started on of the most raddest projects with bonefish. They are trying to figure out where the bonefish go inside of Hilo Bay. They catch a bunch of bonefish and place fish trackers inside of them. I’m hoping this project can be replicated on Oahu. We have a general idea of where this fish go based on observation, but no hard data. We know that these fish spawn in winter and many of the bones leave the reef between November and March. However, we also think they have two spawning periods. Do we really know? Nope. Between November and March we have pictures of thousands of bonefish in giant schools in deep water. Based on our divers seeing these fish in deeper waters during this time, we believe they go into deeper waters to spawn. Fish caught during this time let go a lot of dude juice. So obviously they are getting down. Anyways very cool project. If there is funding out there DM me and I’ll point you in the right direction. My company is 1000% down to catch all the fish.

The first pose is called the RPG. I got shot at by a real RPG when I deployed to Afghanistan. I’m sure the Rocket Propelled Grenade was shot from the shoulder. Anyways! I can laugh about it now.

Super skinny water. Bonefish everywhere. We hooked 14 bonefish. It’s all about presenting the fly and watching how the fish react to seeing the fly is the secret to hooking these fish. This is one of the hardest fish to catch. If you plan on coming to Hawaii, you gotta bring your A game. This is pretty much the Super Bowl of fly fishing. Sometimes the fish are at angles that don’t allow the perfect cast. So we try to put the fly is the best spot. Sometimes we use the structure in the water to decide where the fish will be. Always watch the fish and see how they react. The Ghetto Super Fly, Kalama Beach Special was used to hook this gish for a second. The line wrapped around the butt of the rod.

Such and amazing experience. I grew up in Hilo. In elementary school we took one of our first field trips to Volcano National Parks. I’ve seeing the beauty and destruction of lava. Visiting the park on 2 April 2025 was the first time I saw Halemaumau erupt 1500 feet into the air. What kinda shocked me is the national park did not have individuals manning the gate collecting money. Thousands of dollars in revenue not collected. Anyways!
