A Florida man has filed a lawsuit against Carnival Corporation seeking at least $5 million after claiming he suffered severe second-degree burns to both feet while walking barefoot on the Lido Deck of the Carnival Magic. Jorge Luis Alverio Nunez filed the lawsuit in federal court in Miami on May 11, 2026.

The incident occurred on May 21, 2025, when Nunez walked approximately 20 steps from the pool to his lounge chair on the Lido Deck to put on his shoes. Court documents claim the deck surface was dangerously hot, causing severe burns that required extensive medical treatment. Nunez alleges he was hospitalized and continues to experience ongoing mobility problems and physical disfigurement.

The lawsuit accuses Carnival of negligence for failing to warn passengers about the dangerously hot deck conditions. The complaint states there were no warning signs or notices alerting passengers that the deck could become hot enough to cause second-degree burns in seconds. The suit also claims Carnival failed to monitor deck temperatures, cool the surface, add shade, require shoes, or replace the deck material.

The complaint alleges that Carnival had received at least 42 complaints about overheated deck surfaces in the six years before Nunez's claimed injuries. The lawsuit references past passenger complaints about the API Syntheteak deck material used across the Carnival fleet, with one passenger stating after a June 2022 cruise on Carnival Magic that the deck gets so hot it will burn feet. Carnival has not publicly commented on the suit.

Despite the high cost, they booked a 6:30 AM Spirit Airlines flight from Dallas to Miami on the morning of their 4:00 PM sailing, turning their vacation into a cautionary tale.

The night before departure, the family realized their flight was overbooked and they had no assigned seat numbers. They left home at 3:30 a.m. and arrived at the airport before 5 a.m., but were met with conflicting stories from airline staff about flight attendant shortages and weather issues. The flight went to Miami, but the family was randomly cancelled due to overbooking.

The family was left standing at the gate while their ship prepared to sail without them. Royal Caribbean did not refund their money, and the trip was meant to celebrate their son's spring break and 9th birthday on Wednesday. The father shared that booking with Spirit Airlines ruined everything.

A Reddit post titled "Another reminder to never fly in on the day of your cruise" went viral, racking up over 800 comments in under 24 hours. Commenters questioned why a family spending $30,000 would fly Spirit, noting that American Airlines offers 11 daily flights from Dallas to Miami, providing much better backup options.

Costa Cruises has implemented a new policy that fines passengers for taking food outside designated dining areas. The Carnival Corporation owned cruise line sent a notice to guests stating that all food must be consumed exclusively in designated dining areas, with violations resulting in a fine of about $70.

The policy marks a departure from the common practice of passengers loading up plates with buffet food to take back to their staterooms or other parts of the ship. It's fairly common to see cruisers using this as a free room service hack, though it often results in dirty plates left in hallways.

While 24-hour room service is available on Costa Cruises ships, it is not complimentary unless passengers are in a suite or premium/deluxe cabin. Standard cabins get charged a €5 per person delivery fee for breakfast brought to the cabin, charged per person regardless of how much food is ordered.

So far, Costa Cruises is the only cruise line with this specific rule. The policy has sparked mixed reactions from passengers, with some questioning the logic behind the change and others concerned about how it will be enforced.

A 12-year-old boy aboard Carnival Horizon learned the hard way about wearing camouflage in certain Caribbean ports. Police in Montego Bay, Jamaica sent the child back to the ship and made him change his clothes because camouflage is prohibited by local law.

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald shared the incident as a reminder to guests that some countries do not permit camouflage clothing to be worn except by proper authorities. The restriction applies to anyone, including children, and covers all camouflage material and accessories.

In Jamaica's Ministry of National Security guidelines, other prohibited items include laser light pointers, metal detectors, and pepper sprays. Many Caribbean nations restrict camouflage to prevent confusion with local authorities and military personnel. Countries with similar bans include the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, and St. Lucia.

Carnival Horizon operates alternating Western Caribbean and Southern Caribbean itineraries from Miami, with 6-night Western Caribbean routes visiting either Ocho Rios or Montego Bay in Jamaica. The ship's most recent sailing to Montego Bay was the May 3, 2026 departure. Heald suggested guests check local government websites before cruising and recommended not wearing camouflage anywhere ashore.

Environment Minister Alicia Barcena announced the decision, stating the project would not be approved due to significant ecological concerns. The project faced mounting opposition from environmental groups and local residents worried about impacts to the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world.

Perfect Day Mexico was planned as a 230-acre private island-style destination with a massive waterpark in Mahahual, Mexico. The project was set to feature 30 waterslides and accommodate thousands of guests daily. Royal Caribbean had invested $292 million to buy the cruise port and surrounding area, with an additional $529 million set aside for construction.

In January, a Quintana Roo district court judge halted work on the project due to an injunction request from Right to a Healthy Environment. The environmental organization raised concerns about impacts to the vital mangrove ecosystem and local marine environment. A Change.org petition created by locals in 2025 received more than 4.6 million signatures, despite Mahahual having only around 3,000 residents.

A male passenger died after climbing over his stateroom balcony and jumping into the water on the night of Wednesday, May 13, 2026, aboard Carnival Liberty. It's unclear why the guest chose to make this decision, and it sadly cost him his life.

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), only about 28% of people who go overboard each year are successfully rescued. Carnival crew members found the guest and launched search and rescue operations, though the end result wasn't what anybody wanted.

The 2,974-guest ship stopped to launch search and rescue operations, with no reported impact to the 7-night Bahamas itinerary, which is due back in New Orleans on May 17. This overboard situation marks the third death that involved a Carnival guest jumping or falling from their stateroom balcony in less than a month.

On April 18, another guest jumped from their stateroom balcony while cruising onboard Carnival Splendor in Australia. Just days later, on the morning of April 27, a woman fell to her death from her private balcony onboard Carnival Firenze. The woman crashed onto a lower deck and, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries.
