My Story

Way back in 1980-something, I can’t remember what class it was but we were given an assignment to write a report about a career of our choice. I chose Travel Agent! I looked up books in the card catalog for my report and did some research on Carlson Wagon-Lit school for Travel Agents. I learned all about the profession and thought it sounded fun except for the average income. I could imagine spending my days planning vacations for clients and also traveling a lot myself. I didn’t know any travel agents. We did have a local AAA office but that didn’t seem quite the same. Ultimately I ended up taking a different path.

All throughout life, when I would come to a crossroads and have to consider what I was going to do next, I always revisited the idea of becoming a travel agent. There were always different obstacles: marriage, children, divorce, marriage, children and finding time to go to school and learn how to do it. And then there weren’t schools for that anymore...that I knew of.

Once the kids were mostly raised, I started looking for something to do part time for when the nest was empty. I ended up in a corporate job for a couple of years and then my company downsized. Once again, I began thinking about becoming a travel agent and started to research what it would take to become one. It sure seemed easy! What isn’t immediately apparent is all of the hours of training required just to be able to act & sound like you know about some small part of the industry. And training is ongoing and forever. Thank goodness I like learning about new things!

A lot of the time you hear about travel agents travelling everywhere for free. They don’t! If they are getting anything for free or at a discount it is because they are actually working. Working, as in touring properties. Sometimes 6-8 in a day for 3-4 days in a row. Sound relaxing? Most of us also work on commissions and not 25-30% commissions but 8-10% commissions! And that is not even on the full price of the trip. Vendors dictate what portions of trips are commissionable. But Travel Agents only get that commission if you actually book your trip through us. Glamorous, huh?
