Over 150 bicyclists are in Joplin this weekend for the 2026 BIG BAM, Bicycle Across Missouri, Route 66 ride!

On Friday, 45 cyclists experienced the Route 66 Tri-State Corridor, starting at the Oklahoma-Kansas border in Baxter Springs and riding historic Route 66 back to Landreth Park in Joplin. Along the way, they stopped at several of the local attractions that make this stretch of the Mother Road a favorite for Route 66 travelers.

On Saturday morning, the full group will hit the road from Joplin, following historic Route 66 east toward Carthage before continuing their five-day journey across Missouri and eventually finishing in Pacific.

Local motorists should use extra caution along Route 66 between Joplin and Carthage from approximately 6–10 a.m. Saturday as the cyclists make their way out of town.

The ride is part of the Route 66 Centennial celebration, giving more than 150 cyclists a chance to experience the Mother Road across Missouri.

If you see the riders along the route, give them a wave and cheer them on!

It’s almost time to fire up the fun for a special Route 66 and Cars anniversary weekend at the 66 Drive-in Theater!

Join the celebration Friday, September 4, through Sunday, September 6.

Gates open at 5:30 PM, with showtime at 8:30 PM.

And yes, Lightning McQueen will be there! Get a chance to see him in person from 5:30 PM until showtime.

Route 66 is turning 100, and the Missouri Life Motor Tour is making a big stop in Joplin!

The 2026 Centennial Missouri Life Motor Tour rolls into town on Saturday, September 19, bringing a full day of Route 66 history, art, stories and music to Joplin, Webb City, and Carterville.

Saturday’s lineup includes:
• 3-D Route 66 art
• Joplin Mining Museum tours
• And a Saturday night shindig at Carterville Park featuring live music

The tour runs September 17–20, with stops and activities throughout southwest Missouri, plus a special Joplin meet-up with the Jefferson Highway Association.

Tickets are just $26 for members or $66 for non-members, and non-members get a FREE one-year digital membership!

First Thursdays just hit a little different in downtown Joplin.

On the first Thursday of each month, downtown comes alive with art, music, creativity, and plenty of reasons to wander. From 5:30–8:30 PM, galleries, studios, shops, and pop-up spaces open their doors for First Thursday ArtWalk.

Expect a little bit of everything: painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, live demonstrations, local artists, and plenty of surprises along the way.

But ArtWalk isn’t just about looking at art. It’s about meeting the people who create it, hearing the stories behind the work, discovering something you love, and seeing a different side of downtown Joplin.

Ready to ride the Mother Road?

Big BAM Route 66 starts in Joplin September 4th, 2026, kicking off a week-long cycling adventure across Missouri on historic Route 66.

Riders will pedal from Joplin to Eureka, with stops along the way in Willard, Lebanon, Waynesville, Rolla, Cuba, and more.

It’s not just about the miles. Riders get gear transfers, campgrounds, hot showers, water stops every 12–15 miles, live music, and plenty of Route 66 scenery along the way.

Celebrating 100 years of Route 66 in 100 days!

Zachary Fiske is recreating the Bunion Derby Run to celebrate 100 years of Route 66. He started in Chicago on August 4th and arrived in Joplin this afternoon, 1 day ahead of schedule. He hopes to make it to the Santa Monica pier by November 11th.

Zachary's run celebrates a 1928 footrace across America in which amateur runners traced the original unpaved roads of Route 66.
