We don’t really know what we’re doing… but it will probably involve sea lions 😅

Thank you to everyone who followed along this summer! The season is coming to an end, with our last tour of the season on October 6. After that, things get pretty quiet around Juneau until the whales and tourism return in April. We’ll do our best to keep posting the occasional update!

Thank you to all of our naturalists, captains, and passengers who made our content possible, and to Kyla B for all of the social media work she did amidst the busy summer season. 🫶🏼

Dall’s porpoise!!! Sometimes on the way out to find some bigger whales, like the humpbacks, we get to spend a few moments with these little ones. That’s right, porpoises are a species of toothed whale!
Fun facts:
• There are only 7 species of porpoise in the entire world, and the Dall’s is the largest of the 7 species.
• Their closest relatives are the monodontidae family (narwhals and belugas), followed by the rest of the oceanic dolphins.
• Bow riding is likely a form of energy-saving behavior, but it’s also thought to be something they do for fun!

Excellent video and narration by our naturalist Savannah!

We couldn’t be what we are today without the amazing, skilled, and passionate people who make up our crew. 💙
A huge thank you to all of our passengers who have taken the time to write reviews and share their experiences with us. We especially love seeing our crew members recognized for the knowledge, enthusiasm, kindness, and care they bring to every trip.
We’re incredibly lucky to have such an amazing team, and even luckier to have passengers who take the time to let us know how much they appreciate them. Thank you for an incredible 2026 season! 🐋

Goose was the only calf around with a local Juneau whale mom. Maybe that means summer 2027 will be a big baby year, since humpbacks typically have one calf every 2–3 years! 😁
We had a few more calves with some greater Southeast Alaska humpback moms who just pass through Juneau on occasion. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but these are the babies that naturalist Kyla was able to ID.

This is called “bubble-net feeding”. A group of humpbacks join in a temporary feeding pod. They work together to make a net out of bubbles that herd the small fish into a tight cluster. Then the whales lunge through the school of fish with their mouths open!

This behavior can be seen by humpbacks in any of their feeding grounds but it’s been made famous from tours in SE Alaska like here in Juneau

But it is still rare, only about 10% of are passengers see this in Juneau- more or less depending on what time of year. It is more common off of Juneau from mid-July to mid-August but that is still not a guarantee because each day, and the timing each year, is different. It can also happen sporadically before or after that time.
Additionally, it is a learned behavior so not all humpback whales know how to do this.

We made posts introducing you to our captains, naturalists, and staff so we also wanted to introduce you to some of our summer-time local humpback whales! We love these whales and are lucky to see them back here year after year and often times, almost all summer long. Have you had a chance to meet one of these blubbery celebrities? If so, who?!

A good cold plunge is good for the immune system right? 🤔Would you jump in?
Luckily it doesn’t get this cold here for a while but we are already mentally preparing 😂 like wow! This summer has gone by so quickly! We can’t believe it’s already the end of August. Come visit us and see some humpbacks before they leave on our migration and we go into our winter hibernation! Tours offered until the first week of October

Yes, yes it did
Absolutely insane to have a set of bubblenet feeding happen that close to our boat. Definitely something we try to avoid as we don’t want to disrupt their feeding but sometimes they change direction underwater and we don’t have any warning where they will surface next. Even the gulls are often incorrect about where exactly the whales will be but this time they were pretty close! So all there is left to do is to enjoy the moment and be grateful for these amazing animals to bless us with their presence

🥁🥁🥁
We counted….
18 flukes!
How many did you count?
Humpbacks typically only raise their fluke once before diving so that gives us a good approximation that there were 18 (or more!) humpbacks that our passengers were so fortunate to find on our August 17 tour
