Earth Day is Every Day 🌎

Since time immemorial, our people have lived in harmony with what the Earth has provided. This Earth Day, we celebrate the enduring connection between our community and the land that sustains us.

Goldbelt's mission is to enhance the economic and social well-being of our shareholders through sustainable development and responsible stewardship of our resources. Our vision is to be a leader in creating opportunities that honor our heritage and promote a prosperous future for generations to come.

Our values are deeply rooted in respect for the environment, cultural preservation, and community engagement. These principles guide us as we strive to protect and nurture the natural world that has supported us for millennia.

As part of their cultural exploration, we offer our summer interns the opportunity to harvest goose tongue, various berries, and other traditional foods on Goldbelt’s land near Echo Cove. They also sampled from the abundant traditional foods that could be found every few feet along the trails by the water’s edge. Interns gained valuable insight into how their ancestors thrived on these lands. They learned when, where, and how to best harvest the abundant edible plants in Southeast Alaska.

On this Earth Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to preserving the environment and honoring the traditions that connect us to the land. Together, we can ensure that future generations continue to benefit from the rich natural heritage that defines our community.

Happy Earth Day!

Volunteering for a Good Cause, Craig Douglas Connects Passion with Purpose

In honor of Volunteer Day, we’re spotlighting Craig Douglas, Senior Executive Vice President, and leader of Goldbelt’s Capitol Area Division. Craig joined Goldbelt in 2018 and oversees a portfolio of businesses that focus on Cybersecurity, Military Health, and supporting Military Readiness.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Finance from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He received corporate finance training at Chemical Bank in New York and studied corporate financial analysis at Harvard Business School. Craig is known for his business acumen and calm, steady leadership, but also for his generosity and commitment to service. In his free time, he enjoys golfing and devotes much of his energy to community causes.

Outside of work, Craig serves on the board of Respond to Grace, a faith-based nonprofit in the D.C. metro area that helps individuals experiencing homelessness to access housing, healthcare, food, and mental health support. The organization is data inspired and based upon the three principles of prevention, transformation, and restoration. The vision is to iridate housing insecurity through community based organizations. “We are trying to wrap our arms around that community to the degree that we can, and meeting folks where they are and trying to provide help,” Craig said of organization.
Craig’s dedication to service deepened when he gained an understanding of the devastating impact that the rare disease of chronic lymphedema can have on children and families. In response, Craig joined the Board of Directors of the Three Little Birds Foundation, to supports patients and families affected by chronic lymphedema, a condition requiring critical compression garments that are often not covered by insurance.

To raise awareness and funds, the Three Little Birds Foundation and community partners that included Goldbelt, Inc. turned to a shared passion: golf. Partnering with the American Junior Golf Association, the foundation hosts youth tournaments as a platform to help aspiring golfers gain visibility that could lead to college scholarships. The proceeds from the tournaments funds the Three Little Birds Foundation’s lymphedema support efforts.

On Volunteer Day, we celebrate individuals like Craig Douglas who make a lasting impact on both Goldbelt and the broader community.

Understanding Goldbelt Trusts: Securing Benefits for Today and Tomorrow

Goldbelt is dedicated to supporting shareholders and preserving our cultural, natural, and financial resources through two distinct Trusts: the Goldbelt Ancestral Trust and Goldbelt Tináa Distributions Trust. Managed by boards of trustees from the Goldbelt Board of Directors, these Trusts are designed to benefit shareholders in different ways. Here's what you need to know:

Goldbelt Tináa Distributions Trust (Est. 2019)
✨ Purpose: Provides distributions, scholarships, and other benefits to shareholders.
✨Limitations: The Tináa Trust cannot hold or invest assets to generate income.
✨Tax Benefits: Goldbelt pays federal tax on distributions to shareholders, receiving a tax benefit on donations to the Trust.
✨Beneficiaries: All shareholders of Alaska Native descent are eligible to benefit from this Trust.

Goldbelt Ancestral Trust (Est. 2014)
✨Purpose: Similar to the Alaska Permanent Fund, it distributes a portion of its investment earnings each year to beneficiaries in proportion to the number of shares they own.
✨Protection: The Board determines the maximum annual distribution to ensure the Trust's principal is preserved for future generations, accounting for inflation and investment losses.
✨Long-Term Goal: Acts as a savings account for future generations, providing dividends and burial cost assistance.
✨Beneficiaries: Direct lineal descendants of Goldbelt’s original shareholders of Alaska Native heritage or adoption.

These Trusts are vital tools to support Goldbelt shareholders now and for generations to come. They protect cultural and financial assets while providing direct benefits to eligible shareholders.

Who Qualifies?
✨Goldbelt Tináa Distributions Trust: All shareholders of Alaska Native descent.
✨Goldbelt Ancestral Trust: Direct lineal descendants of the original Goldbelt shareholders of Alaska Native heritage or adoption.

The Right Guy for the Job 🧳

Goldbelt is thrilled to announce the promotion of shareholder Guy Bean to the position of Helpdesk Team Lead. Guy started working as a ticket agent at the Goldbelt Tram while he was still in high school. Then in June 2017 he became a shareholder intern, a role he excelled in across Goldbelt Security and Goldbelt Tram for three seasons. In 2021, he joined the IT team as a full-time employee, and his exceptional performance earned him a promotion to IT Tech II.

“I love the opportunity to learn more and more,” said Guy about his experience working at Goldbelt. “I’ve had great management since I've been with Goldbelt and they continuously push me to either educate myself or give me opportunities where I can get educated with new hardware, new systems, new processes, and I like that growth and continuingly gaining knowledge.”

In his new role, Guy will lead the Service Desk Team, serving as the primary point of contact for our internal customers in Juneau. He will focus on managing service requests and ensuring prompt, effective incident resolution.

“I’ve known Guy since he was an Intern,” said Ben Johnson, Chief Information Officer. “From the day I met him, he has been eager to learn and get better at everything he does. He is reliable; he’s the Guy you can always count on when you need something extra. I can’t say enough good things about him, and I don’t think there is a celling for how far he could advance in this department.”

Guy was a Goldbelt scholarship recipient, and said one of the things he loves most about working at Goldbelt is the opportunity to help other shareholders. “We’re growing consistently, and at a high rate. It's very exciting and it's very fun to be a part of,” said Guy about being a shareholder/employee of Goldbelt. “I love it. I don't get much of a chance to help the shareholders, directly, but like going to the shareholder annual meetings and grabbing food and helping people as much as I can. That feels great.”
