The Secret Behind a Humpback’s Expanding Throat!

Have you ever wondered how humpback whales take in tons of water and fish in just one gulp? It’s all thanks to their ventral pleats—those grooved, accordion-like folds running down their throats and bellies!

When a humpback lunges through a school of fish, these pleats expand like a parachute, allowing the whale to engulf up to 15,000 gallons of water in a single mouthful. Then, using its massive tongue, the whale pushes the water out through its baleen plates, trapping the fish inside for a well-earned meal.
