Want to know one of the coolest things we see in the ocean? Sharks.

Every so often one shows up — usually a whitetip reef shark. It cruises in, takes a look at you, and goes back to whatever it was doing. That's the whole encounter.

But the shark isn't the only show down here. The fish that won't come out from under the ledge. The thing moving at the edge of your visibility. The shape you can't identify yet, until it glides right underneath you.

All these fish are faster than Michael Phelps.

You give one kick, they give three, and they're gone. So the thing we actually spend our time teaching isn't speed. It's patience — and it's one of the hardest things to train in this sport.

Most of the time you don't get the shot. You surface, you breathe, and you put as little pressure on those fish as possible. Whatever time you spend down on the dive, double that on the surface at a minimum: re-oxygenating, purging carbon dioxide, waiting.

That's the part nobody puts in the highlight reel.

The thing that stops most beginners isn't their lungs. It's their ears.

Ten feet down the pressure starts pressing in, and if you can't equalize you simply cannot go any deeper. It doesn't matter how fit you are or how long you can hold your breath.

People show up thinking they need to train their breath-hold. Almost nobody shows up knowing how to clear their ears on the way down, before it starts to hurt.
