Today, for Episode 25, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the lava fountain was visible through the trees at the Volcano golf course AND from the road in the National Park near the steam vents. Impressive lava fountain 🌋🏝️🏞️!

Video from some of the lava fountains the UGSG cameras picked up this morning. This eruption was pretty short, it ended by 4:28 this morning.

Episode 24 started in the middle of the night. After several nights of waking up multiple times throughout the night checking for an eruption, we missed the first 3 hours of this one. We woke up at 3:30 AM and drove across the highway. And it’s misty and raining. Our tripods are set up ready for it to clear out.

Meet the ʻIʻiwi ( Pronounced... EEVee ) many peoples Favourite Native Bird.

Meet the ʻIʻiwi (Drepanis coccinea). This bird’s unique beak is specialized for fitting into and reaching nectar from tube-shaped flowers! Found in tropical forests across the Hawaiian islands, it plays an important role in pollination. Once one of the most common Hawaiian birds, the ʻIʻiwi is threatened by human activity including habitat loss and the introduction of invasive species.

We had a family from Arizona today find an INCREDIBLE amount of reticulite from the eruption on 5-25-25! In all my years in the Park, I have not seen this amount of the rarer material, reticulite. Good job, Eric, Jen, Lyla, and Emi! What an incredible find! I included a snip from the huge lava fountain that produced this material.

Reticulite develops only in very high fountains, say 300 m (1,000 feet) or higher, that shoot rapidly from the vent. Reticulite rises higher than pumice and blows farther downwind before falling to the ground (USGS).

Video I took today in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The lava fountain was in the top 3% of the lava we have seen, to put it into perspective.
