Hāna is one of those places where starting early pays off. Catching sunrise along the coast of East Maui gives you spectacular colors off the water.

Hāmoa Beach is a favorite for its wide crescent of sand and clear water, and Waiʻānapanapa State Park adds black sand, lava formations, sea stacks, blowholes, and a native hala forest to the day.

Non-Hawaiʻi residents need advance reservations for Waiʻānapanapa, so it’s worth planning that stop ahead of time.

Planning a December trip? We put together a guide covering the weather, whales, swimming, surf, what to pack, and what changes once the Christmas and New Year’s crowds arrive.

December on Maui can give you beach weather, humpback whales, big winter surf, holiday crowds, and a surprisingly cold morning on Haleakalā, all in the same trip.

Daytime temperatures often reach the low 80s, with cooler evenings, and South Maui is usually warmer and drier than the windward side. December is part of the wetter season, so a little rain is normal, often in short bursts.

It’s also the start of one of our favorite times of year. Humpback sightings become more common, and you may spot a spout, tail slap, or breach right from the beach. Winter swells can bring very large surf to north and west-facing shores, so ocean conditions are always worth checking before getting in.

One of the best things about Royal Mauian 116 is how much you can do without getting in the car. Kamaole I and II are on either side of the property, and plenty of Kīhei restaurants, shops, and coffee spots are just across the street.
