In Corfu, the cobbled streets become a gathering place. Young and old alike take part in the Mediterranean tradition of the passeggiata—a leisurely stroll that is as much about connecting with people as it is about getting somewhere. We were happy to join in.

A recent port stop aboard Windstar’s Star Legend offered us a piece of Greece, a slice of Sicily, and a chance to experience one of the Mediterranean’s most enduring traditions.

We wandered through Corfu’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where centuries of history are written into the architecture. Unlike many places that have been reshaped by time and development, Corfu has preserved much of its historic center, with elegant buildings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries standing alongside fortifications built during four centuries of Venetian rule.

The setting felt distinctly different from the Greece we expected—more Venetian than Cycladic, more Italian than whitewashed island village—and provided the perfect backdrop for an evening passeggiata among the locals.

Exploring the markets of Cagliari with Chef Neil was one of the highlights of our time in Sardinia. He took 17 lucky guests on a guided tour through the famous San Benedetto Market, where locals shop daily for the freshest ingredients imaginable.

Sardinia is one of the world’s well-known Blue Zones — places where people are known to live longer, healthier lives — and walking through this vibrant market, it was easy to see why. Tables overflowed with fresh fruits, local cheeses, cured meats, and regional specialties, all deeply connected to the island’s food culture and way of life.

Along the way, we sampled local cold cuts, cheeses, sweet seasonal fruit, and Sardinian wine while learning more about the traditions behind the flavors. More than just a market visit, it felt like a glimpse into everyday life in authentic Sardinia. 🇮🇹🍷🧀🍇
