Lancaster's glass story runs on cheap fuel and good sand. Hocking Glass started up along the Hocking River in 1905, and an automatic pressing machine that pushed output from one piece a minute to more than thirty made the town the world's largest producer of pressed glass during the Depression. The Ohio Glass Museum, opened in 2002, lays out that history and traces the craft back to the ancient Egyptians.

A Hot Glass Studio was added in 2010, so demonstrations happen while you walk the floor. Docents lead tours, videos fill in the manufacturing side, and there's a gift shop on the way out. The building is wheelchair accessible, with parking behind it. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 4. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 55 and up, and $3 for students ages 6 to 18.

Lots of great places to visit!

A one-hour drive can easily turn into an all-day Ohio road trip. Parks, overlooks, quirky museums, antique stops, and natural wonders make these 13 detours hard to pass up.

Stunning! The Waterfalls are still going strong!

The days have felt so busy lately! A photo here from a slightly slower morning this past Wednesday at Ash Cave. The falls were still flowing strong even a few days removed from the rainy span we had the week prior. With the cave still quite dark, my camera did most of the seeing, but I did all of the listening. It felt nice to sit in the cool sand with my back against a boulder in the morning’s dim light.

The keen observer may notice a new addition to the scenery at Ash Cave. One of those summer storms brought down a large maple tree (I think it is) right at the mouth of the cave. Not to mention the massive beech tree laying against the path leading back to Ash Cave. The winds have made a few changes around here!
