With the rental of the Island, you also have access to Seabird's 19' Boston Whaler which is provided for transportation to and from the mainland as well as recreation around the Island. One of the cool features of the Island is the outdoor kitchen which is located near the water. Another awesome feature is the 36' widow's walk on the rooftop of the house. You can enjoy 360 degree ocean views from this unique vantage point overlooking the tropical gardens all around. Seabird has fabulous flowering trees and plants throughout the 10 acres. The sandy paths winding throughout the entire island give you the feeling of being in a true tropical paradise. Every week at Seabird Key starts on a Saturday.

Stays run Saturday to Saturday, seven nights, one group on the whole island. You meet the boat at our Marathon land base, cross in about five minutes, and the mainland stays where you left it. Ten acres of private beach, garden and jungle trails, and a 35’ widows walk over the mangroves. An Old Florida–style home that sleeps eight comfortably, with air conditioning, an indoor galley kitchen, and a full outdoor kitchen and bar. A 19’ Boston Whaler and a private dock included.

September and October are the stretch we’d pick ourselves: the water is at its warmest, the boat traffic has thinned, and the days run long and unhurried.

We didn’t shoot any of them, and that’s exactly why we’re sharing them. These are the pictures people take when nobody’s directing — kids on the dock, the dog claiming the shade under the porch, dinner outside going cold because the sky started doing something better.

A full week is what produces photos like these. The first day or two you’re still unwinding. It’s somewhere in the middle, once the island’s pace takes over, that the camera roll starts filling up on its own.

The hardest part of a multi-generational trip is never the destination. It’s the calendar.

October is usually when it works. School districts with a fall break open up a window, grandparents are wide open regardless, and the Keys are past the busiest stretch of the year, warm water, thinner boat traffic, and long, easy days.
