Every year during October, Marathon and the other Keys come alive with all sorts of events. Guests can spend a Saturday night walking with the witches at Crane Point or watching a movie from a float at Bongo’s, then plan a trip south for Goombay and the Fantasy Fest Parade on Duval Street. Families will find plenty of free and family friendly options closer to home, from trick or treating at Sombrero Beach to the Switlik Spooktacular, all before returning each evening to a quieter stretch of island. The Old Seven Mile Bridge has watched more than a century of Keys sunsets go by, and on Saturday, October 10, Marathon is gathering on it to raise a glass to the nation’s 250th birthday as the sun dips below the horizon around 7:05. Monroe County, the Tourist Development Council and the City of Marathon are hosting a free evening with live music and dancing from the Pierce August Band, Caribbean bites prepared by the Marathon High School culinary team, and a sunset toast poured with Grimal Grove juices.

Parking isn’t available at the bridge itself, so guests can park free at the Pigeon Key trolley lot at 7 Mile Marina, ride the van from the Stanley Switlik parking area on 33rd Street, or walk up from Knights Key beneath the bridge. When the youngest guests in the house have strong opinions about a vacation, you know it went well, and Brooke’s kids made it clear that the pool and kayaks at Sitting at the Dock on the Bay were the stars of their trip. Between afternoons splashing in the private pool, paddling the quiet canals of Marathon’s Coco Plum neighborhood, and spotting manatees from the dock nearly every day, the whole family found plenty to love, while the parents appreciated a clean, comfortable home and a central location for exploring the rest of the Keys. Our favorite time of year is here.
