A layover is the short pause between connecting flights, usually a few hours to change planes, and under 24 hours on an international trip. A stopover is longer and planned, over 24 hours internationally, long enough to leave the airport, collect your bags, book a hotel, and actually see the city. Check the clock before you book, because crossing that line can change your fare and your baggage plans.

GATE LICE

The plane is not at the gate, boarding has not started, and the agent has not picked up the microphone, yet the crowd is already standing at the boarding door. Those are the gate lice, and crowding the door boards nobody sooner. Your seat is already assigned, and the crowd just blocks the travelers whose group really is called. A codeshare is a flight sold by one airline but flown by another. Your ticket can carry one airline's name and flight number while a partner airline provides the plane and the crew. Always look for the words "operated by" on your booking: that name decides where you check in, whose baggage rules apply, and which desk to go to when plans change.

ITALY GENERAL STRIKE FRIDAY: YOUR FLIGHT WILL PROBABLY RUN, YOUR TRAIN MAY NOT

Travelers headed to Italy on Friday, October 30: the USB nationwide general strike is still on. Trains are disrupted from 9 p.m. Thursday, October 29, to 8:59 p.m. Friday, including trains to airports. The transport ministry ordered the transport strike postponed, because October 30 to November 5 is a protected no strike period, but USB says it will go ahead anyway. Pisa and Florence are the airports to watch, with airport staff there on a 24 hour strike Friday. Elsewhere, most flights are expected to run, and the protected windows are 7 to 10 in the morning and 6 to 9 in the evening. Check your train and your flight the night before, and build in serious buffer time.

SPAIN TRAIN STRIKE THURSDAY

Travelers headed to Spain on Thursday October 29: Renfe train drivers are on a 24 hour strike, but minimum services keep most trains running, about 73 percent of high speed and long distance, 65 percent of regional, and commuter trains at 75 percent in rush hour and 50 percent the rest of the day. Watch the airport trains in Madrid and Barcelona, check your exact train number in the Renfe app, and know your choices if it is canceled: full refund, the next suitable train, or a later date at no extra cost. Ouigo drivers are reported to strike Friday and again Monday.

A gate-checked bag is a carry-on taken at the gate and put in the cargo hold, usually because the overhead bins are full, the plane is smaller, or you boarded late in line. On many larger planes you collect it at baggage claim. On smaller regional planes, a valet tag means it waits on the jet bridge right after you land. Before you hand it over, move medicine, keys, chargers, and anything valuable into your personal item, and take a photo of the claim tag.
