Day 6 · Monte Carlo — ‘Yacht Show Week’

Day six: Monte Carlo, during the Monaco Yacht Show — so the harbor was full of extraordinary boats and the cars outside the Casino looked staged for a photograph. Because the ship stayed overnight, we could take it slowly: a walk around the harbor, a coffee in the sun, and back aboard whenever we liked. Have you been to Monaco, or is it still on your list?

Day 5 · At Sea — ‘Suite 912’

Our first sea day, and the day I realized how well looked after we were. We had a Penthouse Suite with a butler, Myron, who seemed to know what we needed before we asked — the fridge stocked with our favorites, a closet big enough to dress in, a fresh orchid, and the most comfortable bed. And the laundry is included and unlimited, which matters more than you would think on an eleven-night trip. What travel chore would you hand off first?

Day 4 · Mallorca — ‘Underground’

Our second day in Mallorca took us underground, into the caves on the island’s east coast — stalactites like candle wax, a winding path into the dark, and a still underground lake at the bottom. It was one of the most memorable afternoons of the trip, and it is a good example of something I liked about Regent: most shore excursions are included, so you choose what interests you without doing the math first.

Day 3 · Palma — ‘Arriving by Sea’

Day three: Palma de Mallorca, arriving by sea with La Seu cathedral standing right over the harbor. We spent the day wandering the old town — narrow lanes, a cathedral full of light, a long lunch, and a stop at La Montaña for Mallorcan sobrassada and cheese. Palma is a city for walking slowly, and with the ship staying overnight we had the time to do exactly that.

Barcelona — ‘The Overnight’

Day two in Barcelona, and the reason I now look for overnights when I plan a cruise: the ship stayed, so we did not have to rush. We spent the afternoon inside Sagrada Família — the stained glass throws blue and green light on one side and red and gold on the other — then wandered past Casa Batlló and back aboard without looking at a watch. Day 1 · Barcelona — ‘Unpack Once’

I spent eleven nights in September sailing from Barcelona to Rome aboard Regent Seven Seas’ Seven Seas Mariner, and the best part began on the first afternoon: I unpacked once. Mallorca, Monaco, Tuscany, Rome — the ship moved, and my suitcase stayed in the closet. Over the next few weeks I will share one post for every day aboard, ending with my honest take on who this kind of trip suits. The Night Before — ‘Steel Outside, Sea Inside’

One night in Barcelona before our ship sailed for Rome, and I am glad we did not spend it beside the terminal. Hotel Arts Barcelona is the steel tower on the waterfront, built for the 1992 Olympics, with Frank Gehry’s golden fish at its feet. We were on the twenty-ninth floor looking at Montjuïc, in a room roughly twice the size of what a European city usually gives you. My favorite detail: a sofa under the window with a mirror at each end, so you can face the mountain and still see the sea. Kenny and I arrived hours late after a cancelled flight, were offered a glass of local vermouth, and it felt like the first evening of the trip. The cruise port is about ten minutes away. Two Islands, One Trip — The Comparison and the Close
Closing out ten posts and two islands with the honest comparison. Park Hyatt St. Kitts: 124 rooms, rarely full, exceptional spa and food, a deep blue Atlantic-brushed sea rather than postcard turquoise — go for real quiet. Four Seasons Resort Nevis: a gentler island, golden sand, twenty villas and estate homes for whole families, and a twenty-year sea turtle conservancy program — go for the polish and the family gathering. And what I would actually build for you: both, three nights each, two miles of water in between. Hardly anyone does it, and it is the best idea I came home with. If the Caribbean is on your mind for this winter or next, reach out.

The Mountain and the Beach — ‘Why Nevis Feels Like That’

Nevis is essentially one mountain in the sea, and that explains how it feels: green going up, golden coming down to the water, a cloud on the peak most days, and a calm leeward beach where the sunsets happen over St. Kitts. What struck me at Four Seasons Resort Nevis was the tempo — more than two hundred rooms, suites, and villas, and it never once felt like it. Nobody hurried. If you are choosing between the two islands, I have come to think of St. Kitts as the wilder one and Nevis as the gentler one. Neither is better. They are for different weeks of your life. Which one sounds like the week you need?

The Villas — ‘Twenty Houses on a Resort’

The holiday-season answer. Not a room, not a rental — a house with a resort attached, at a scale that solves the family-Christmas problem.

Something most people do not know about Four Seasons Resort Nevis: it has twenty villas and estate homes, from three bedrooms up to seven, many with private pools, spread along the beach and up the hillside. I toured four of them last month, including a six-bedroom. It is the answer to the family-holiday problem — a whole house for everyone, with a resort’s restaurants, spa, and service underneath it, so nobody is cooking on the twenty-sixth. If a big family trip has been circling in your family, this is a conversation worth having early. The good houses go first.
