Another buck has hit the dirt 🇸🇪🦌

Luke had won this roebuck hunt with me at the Dallas Safari Club Utah chapter banquet last year. Little did he know that he was going to kill one of the infamous “killer bucks” 😍

(We call them “killer bucks” because they don’t have the front or back prongs like a typical roebuck 6point and for that reason when fighting other bucks they won’t interlock and can gore the other buck right in the neck, sometimes leading to mortal wounds causing the injured buck to end up dying.)

We had seen this long-horned old warrior on last week’s hunt already and he had actually avoided a bullet once before. So when we found him again yesterday, the hunt was on! The buck was feeding at about 300 yards out in the middle of an open green field. We managed to sneak up on him using the ditch on the edge of the field for cover. At 150 yards Luke hit him right in the heart and the buck tipped over after a 100 yard death rush.

Oh man..! Talk about down to the wire 😅

After a couple of slow days with very limited buck movement as well as a failed attempt at a different deer, we sure pulled a Hail Mary on this buck during the last 10 minutes of legal light on the last day of the hunt!

I guess it is true when they say…it ain’t over till the fat lady sings 👊🏽 all the stars aligned this past week and we were fortunate to be able to take 3 nice roebucks during 4 days of hunting.

We had tried to get this dark-horned buck the day before already, but just could not get him to come across the field even using the doe call.

With the rut pretty much over and warm temperatures making for hard hunting conditions, limiting the deer movement to just a few hours max every morning and evening, we resorted to checking every field, meadow and clear cut on the property multiple times during the day just in case a buck decided to go for a walk about or stand up to start feeding.

When we came around the bend in the road late morning, this buck was moving along the edge of a field. We quickly got set up and managed to stop him just long enough using the doe call so that Tressa could drop him in his tracks at 145 yards.

Once we got done doing some predator control, Kayla decided it was time for her to take her first Swedish roebuck.

After a quick stalk, we got close enough for her to take the shot and she managed to connect with this beautiful buck. He was still hanging out with a doe, but the rut seems to be pretty much over already. As you can see his antlers were a little busted up from fighting, so he must have been rutting pretty hard.

The 2026 roebuck season is off to a good start 😎✌🏽
