FYI: UNESCO has designated August 23rd each year as the "International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition." It is a day dedicated to remembering the horrors of enslavement and honoring the courage of those who fought for freedom. The observance aims to preserve the memory of the tragedy of the human trade and provides an opportunity for collective reflection on its historical causes, methods and consequences.

On Thursday, 20 August 2026, from 6:30 -7:30 p.m. BST (1:30-2:30 p.m. EDT) the Mayor of London will host the annual commemoration marking UNESCO's International Day. The ceremony will feature an opening address by Professor Matthew J. Smith, writer, Professor of Caribbean History, and Director of the Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery at University College London.
