👻 WHAT LURKS BENEATH: GHOST SHIP! 🏴‍☠️⚓️

Something spooky is coming to Mystic, CT | Best Recommendations, and it all starts TOMORROW! 👀👻

This October, Mystic Seaport Museum is bringing an entirely new Halloween experience to its historic waterfront with What Lurks Beneath: Ghost Ship!

The story takes us back to 1826, when the whaling ship Grampus disappeared after a violent storm and mutiny at sea. Now, 200 years later, the ship has mysteriously returned to Mystic, and its ghostly crew has some unfinished business! 💀

Visitors will get to explore the Seaport after dark, encountering haunted sailors, live performances, eerie stories, and supernatural surprises throughout the historic waterfront. And for those feeling extra brave, there are optional indoor experiences that take things a little further! 🏴‍☠️

The experience is recommended for ages 8 and up, with plenty of spooky fun without being an extreme haunted attraction.

🇺🇸 Ride Rochambeau - Episode 4: Canterbury 📍

After passing through Plainfield in June of 1781, Rochambeau’s French army continued through Canterbury on its journey west to join George Washington’s forces. Today, you can still find pieces of that landscape along Manship Road and Barstow Road, where woods, fields, stone walls and winding roads preserve some of the character the French encountered more than 240 years ago.

But Canterbury’s story goes far beyond the Revolutionary War. Visit the ⁠Prudence Crandall Museum, a National Historic Landmark where Prudence Crandall and Sarah Harris challenged barriers to education in the 1830s, a story that became part of the nation’s early civil rights and abolitionist history.

Then experience Canterbury today. Discover Wh**ky Mentors at Canterbury Liquors for a unique local spirits experience, or stop at D&G Pizza and Pub for something to eat and one of their 22 craft beers on tap.

🇺🇸 Ride Rochambeau - Episode 3: Plainfield 📍

Imagine thousands of soldiers, horses, artillery and supply wagons making their way through this landscape more than 240 years ago.

In June of 1781, General Rochambeau’s French army marched through Plainfield, Connecticut on its way west to meet George Washington’s Continental Army. The troops established their third Connecticut camp in Plainfield before continuing toward Scotland and eventually New York.

What makes Plainfield especially fascinating is how much of the landscape still tells that story. A 3.6 mile section of Plainfield Pike is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its winding terrain, historic stone walls and distant ridge views still reflect features the French soldiers would have encountered along their journey.

Of course, Plainfield has grown far beyond the small rural community those soldiers encountered. Today, the route carries us through a living Eastern Connecticut town while pieces of its Revolutionary history remain woven into the landscape.

That’s what Ride Rochambeau is all about. Following the road, finding the history that’s still here and discovering the communities that grew around it.

✨ Another Successful CT Day at The Big E ✨
What a fantastic day! Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce was thrilled to be back at The Big E for Connecticut Day, proudly representing our incredible southeastern community and the amazing businesses that make our region so special! 💙
From the moment visitors walked through the doors, we were ready to welcome them with information about our area through brochures, lots of giveaway swag, and plenty of inspiration to add southeastern Connecticut to their next adventure. 🌊
And the fun didn't stop there! Our CT House crew had an amazing lineup, including some of our friends and partners from home:
🍷 Jonathan Edwards Winery, pouring delicious w**e and frozè.
🎰 Mohegan Sun & Foxwoods Resort Casino bringing the excitement with giveaway games down the hall.
We also had the pleasure of meeting Christa Steiner, Miss Connecticut , Hartford Wolf Pack mascot, Sonar, and a special guest Mermaid, making a splash with Mystic Aquarium! And, we of course enjoyed some of the amazing food The Big E is known for! (Because networking is always better with snacks. 😉)

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make Connecticut Day another great success. To our partners, participating businesses, visitors, and everyone who helped showcase the best of southeastern Connecticut, we appreciate you more than you know!

New London’s history came to life last weekend during the CT Maritime Festival.

The evening began on Bank Street with a procession carrying a Benedict Arnold effigy through downtown, continuing a unique local tradition that remembers one of the most dramatic chapters in New London’s history.

In 1781, during the American Revolution, British forces led by Benedict Arnold attacked New London. The town was set ablaze, leaving much of the community destroyed and forever marking the event in the city’s history.

Today, the burning of the Arnold effigy serves as a symbolic connection to that past and a reminder of the people, events, and conflicts that helped shape New London and Connecticut.

The evening concluded with a spectacular drone show over the waterfront, portraying Connecticut’s rich maritime history and the importance of its rivers, harbors, ships, and coastal communities.
