It is okay to do the famous thing.

There is a strange pressure in travel to prove that we are somehow above the obvious.

Skip the Eiffel Tower. Avoid the touristy restaurant. Never go anywhere you have seen on Instagram.

I disagree.

If you have dreamed of seeing the famous thing, go see it.

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Visit the Colosseum. Stand under the Eiffel Tower. Go to Hobbiton. Take the photo. Enjoy yourself.

Experiential travel does not require rejecting the places everyone knows. It simply means the famous thing does not have to be the entire trip.

See the landmark—and then walk three streets farther.
Visit the museum—and then have lunch where the neighborhood actually eats.
Take the iconic photo—and then put your phone away for a while.

You do not get extra travel points for pretending you were never interested in the obvious.

Sometimes the famous thing is famous for a very good reason.

White space is not wasted vacation time.

One of the easiest ways to ruin a very good trip is to schedule every hour of it.

I understand the temptation. You flew all this way. You spent the money. You have a list. Of course you want to make the most of it.

But “making the most of it” does not have to mean filling every available space.

An unplanned afternoon gives you room to stay longer at lunch. Wander into the shop you passed that morning. Sit with a glass of w**e. Go back to the place you unexpectedly loved. Take a nap without feeling as though you failed at vacation.

Some of my favorite travel moments have happened because there was enough room in the itinerary for something unplanned to become the plan.

Build the important things in. Then leave some air around them.

White space is not wasted vacation time. Sometimes it is where the trip finally starts to feel like a vacation.

Why I like a home base instead of changing hotels constantly.

There is a point in trip planning where “seeing more” starts costing you more than it gives you.

Changing hotels every night or two sounds efficient on paper. In reality, it means packing, checking out, hauling luggage, finding the next hotel, waiting for the room, unpacking—and repeating the whole exercise again.

That is a lot of vacation spent in transit.

When the geography allows it, I would rather choose a well-located home base and explore from there. You learn your neighborhood. You find the coffee shop you actually like. You stop checking Google Maps every time you leave the hotel. Dinner feels easier because you already know how to get home.

Day trips can give you variety without making your suitcase part of the itinerary.

There are absolutely trips where moving around makes sense. But I do not change hotels just to say I slept in another city.

A good home base gives a trip rhythm. And rhythm is underrated.

Spend where it changes the experience.

I love a beautiful hotel as much as anyone. But when I am deciding where to put the extra money in a trip, I ask one question: will this actually change the experience?

Sometimes the answer is the room—the balcony over the caldera, the lodge inside the park, the hotel that lets you walk everywhere instead of spending an hour in traffic.

Sometimes it is not.

Sometimes the better splurge is the private guide who gets you into a place before the crowds. The boat that takes you somewhere you cannot reach from shore. The tasting menu you will still be talking about five years later. The business-class seat on the overnight flight that gives you back your first day.

Luxury, to me, is not automatically choosing the most expensive option. It is knowing which upgrade matters.

Spend where it changes the experience. Save where it does not.

Where have you spent more on a trip and thought, “Absolutely worth it”?

You don’t need to splurge on everything to have an incredible vacation.

Spend more on the things that actually change the experience. Save on the things you won’t remember.

A better flight when it matters. The hotel in the right location. One spectacular meal. The experience you came all that way for.

And maybe skip the suite you’ll barely see.

In my latest article, I’m sharing how I decide where to splurge, where to save, and why the best travel budget isn’t always about spending less—it’s about spending well.
