Workshops
Rosalind Philips Photography shares Rosalind's love of nature and photography through workshops. The workshops emphasize a hand-on approach towards learning photography and photo-editing skills. Three types of workshops are offered; Photography, Computer Techniques and Fields Trips. The Photography workshops center around the demonstration of a technique and then an opportunity for participants to practice the technique. After practice, participants are invited to share their work with everyone for discussion. After the discussion, we either practice some more or move on to the next technique. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops and photo-editing software. The software used for demonstration purposes is Photoshop Elements 11. Animal Companion Portraits

Rosalind Philips Photography offers Rosalind's work in several formats. Please take the time to look at her images. Choose the "Gallery" tab. Available Formats: Cards -4x6 images in a 5x7 card. The cards are blank inside and come with an envelope. They fit easily into a 5x7 frame as a keepsake. Matted and framed pieces Images are doubled matted using black acid-free matboard. Rectangular and oval mats are available. Matted pieces are framed using Nielson black or silver frames with conservation glass. When I go out to take bird photos, I always have my 200-600 mm lens on. It is almost always zoomed out to 600 mm; once in a while I may back off to 500 mm so that I have room level and crop my image. I am so wrapped up in getting a portrait type shot of my subject doing something that I forget about the story that the environment tells about my subject. That is what this article is about. It is a reminder about why the environment is just as important as the subject.

The next time you are out with your camera, remember the environment. I know I will.

Avalanche Lilies show up along the edges of snowmelt at Mt. Rainier, and that quick burst of white and gold always feels like the first real sign of summer. I made this image to bring that cool, mossy green and the simple, star-like blooms into a calm corner of the home. Mowich Lake sits in the northwest corner of Mount Rainier National Park. Mowich is a Chinook word meaning deer. I was there on a foggy morning that felt like another world. Three moments that stopped me in the field. Warbler Quartet captures the subtlety of fall migration—birds that travel thousands of miles wearing their quietest colors. I've Got It! is pure intent: an eagle has secured its prey. Tranquility is what I found when I returned to Tern Lake at dawn, trading wind for stillness and getting the reflection I'd envisioned. Each one took planning, patience, and the willingness to show up twice.

On my first trip to the Galapagos I ended up with this unexpected image. A female magnificent frigate bird appears as a translucent field of iris petals, set against soft aqua with lavender and violet tones and warm yellow highlights. It felt like serendipity. On a rainy morning along Alaska's Sterling Highway I made a quick U-turn after seeing a cow moose splashing in a bog. A shaft of sunlight lit the moose just as water and mud flew up around it, one of those sudden, lively moments from my visit to the Kenai Peninsula. I visited Lower Lewis River Falls on a rainy fall day. Golden maple leaves arc across the foreground, their warm tones set against cool sheets of water moving over a tiered rock ledge. Weathered logs caught at the lip add rugged, angular lines while dense evergreens form a deep, shadowed backdrop. The cool blues and slate grays beside autumn golds feel calm but alive.
