"We’ve found that a lot of riders aren’t necessarily looking for the longest trip possible anymore. They’re looking for the most enjoyable one. It becomes less about ‘checking off the whole trail’ and more about slowing down and truly enjoying the ride, the river towns, and the experience along the way." Sara Petyk

Not every adventure has to begin with a long shuttle ride, big mileage goals, or the pressure to say you rode “the whole thing.” In fact, one of our favorite ways to experience the Katy Trail begins in the charming river town of Rocheport.

Things riders always remember from the Ohio to Erie Trail are the incredible variety and the feeling of crossing an entire state under their own power. In just over 320 miles, you move from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, riding through farmland, canal paths, vibrant cities, and the quiet roads of Amish country. It feels less like a single trail and more like a true cross state journey through the heart of Ohio.

On the Great Allegheny Passage, the longest continuous downhill stretch is about 20 miles, dropping gently from the Eastern Continental Divide into Cumberland. After days of gradual climbing, riders are rewarded with effortless coasting through forests and tunnels, a stretch most people never forget.

Moments like this are why we’ve spent the past 15 years riding, exploring, and sharing the GAP. It isn’t just a trail to us. It’s where our story began.

If experiencing this ride has been on your list, there’s nothing quite like finally doing it.

Our C&O Canal Towpath tour follows 185 miles of incredible history along the Potomac River and has become one of the most popular self guided bike routes in the country. Expect mostly flat terrain, about 40 to 55 miles per day, and a true sense of journey as you ride through quiet forests, canal towns, Civil War landmarks, and iconic stops like the Paw Paw Tunnel, Harpers Ferry, and Great Falls before reaching Washington, D.C.

It also connects seamlessly with the Great Allegheny Passage for riders looking to extend their adventure even farther.

Four and five day trips are available, as well as our Blueprint option for those who want to plan their own ride with expert guidance.

Ask anyone who’s ridden the GAP or C&O why they want to go back, and you’ll usually get the same answer. It just feels right.

No traffic stress. No constant stops. Just long, steady miles where you can settle into your rhythm and let the world quiet down. The river is almost always nearby, the grades are forgiving, and the trail towns truly welcome riders. Some days it’s tunnels and waterfalls. Other days it’s a simple lunch stop that turns into a highlight of the trip.

Somewhere along the way, it stops being about the mileage and starts being about how the ride makes you feel. And when it’s over, most riders aren’t thinking “I did that.” They’re thinking, “I want to do it again.”

Birthdays, big miles, small-town charm, and a trip so good they’re already planning the next one. This is what the KATY Trail is all about.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the KATY. Everything flowed so smoothly, from the luggage shuttles to the people shuttling. The company you use for that service is amazing. The hotels were so much fun too. It was great to see the support of local establishments like Hotel Frederick, Bothwell, and Captain Wohlt. Those places gave us something to look forward to at the end of each day.

The pace worked well for us. The 64 mile day was big, but we took our time and had a blast. It was my 64th birthday, so 64 miles for 64 years made it extra memorable.

Riding with GPS took the worry out of navigation and helped us know what to expect for food along the trail, which was a big help.

Every part of the experience was amazing. That’s why we’re already in the process of booking our next adventure.”

The Great Allegheny Passage climbs so gradually that you gain over 2,000 feet in elevation without ever feeling like you’re “climbing” a mountain.

Because it follows historic railroad grades, the slope is gentle and steady all the way to the Eastern Continental Divide. Many riders are surprised to learn they’ve crossed a major mountain range until they start enjoying the long, smooth downhill toward Cumberland.

There’s something special about hearing from riders who come back again.

“The accommodations were great, and we loved how each one was so different. The pace was perfect. We had plenty of time each day to stop, explore, and read about the history along the trail. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

Like last time, we loved having the Ride with GPS navigation routes and the accompanying information about what to see along the way. The details about food on the trail and in the end towns were priceless.”
