Halloween did not begin with costumes and store-bought candy. It began here, in County Meath, Ireland, where the Celts marked the end of the harvest with fires on the hills and a belief that the line between this world and the next grew thin for one night each year.

Two thousand years later, the ground still holds that history. The mounds below are part of it, quiet reminders of where the whole tradition stands.

Late October is Ireland at its most atmospheric: low gold light, empty roads, and a calendar of festivals that keep the old story alive, from the fires of the Púca Festival Festival in Meath to Derry Halloween's 40th anniversary on the River Foyle.

This is the version of Scotland waiting at the other end of summer.

The hills turn before anything else does, gold sliding into rust across the glens weeks before it happens anywhere else. The light drops lower and holds longer into the evening, the kind that turns an ordinary early dinner into the best part of the day. Whisky tastes different by a peat fire than it does anywhere else, and this is the season that proves it.
