🏝️ Mahamoku – “Island of Peace”
This elegant 1914 beach house on Kauai’s North Shore carries one of the most fitting names in the islands: Mahamoku — “Island of Peace.”
Overlooking Hanalei Bay, the house was built for Mabel I. Wilcox with design help from her brother Charles. In January 1914 the Wilcox family and Ethel M. Damon purchased the prime 1,776-acre property at a government land auction in Lihue. Just eight months later, between September and November, master builder Sam Itchioka of Lihue completed the “L”-shaped single-wall board-and-batten pine house. Mabel sited it deliberately to enjoy the same sweeping mauka (mountain) views her grandparents had loved from the historic Waioli Mission Home nearby.
The design is pure relaxed island living: high-pitched ceilings for airflow, a deep lanai, sleeping loft, kitchen-pantry wing, and thoughtful rooflines that provide shade and shelter from Hanalei’s frequent rains. It was built as a true beach retreat — informal, airy, and perfectly suited to its spectacular setting.
Mabel I. Wilcox (1882–1978) was a remarkable figure in her own right — Kauai’s first public health nurse, who devoted fifty years to improving healthcare for women, children, and plantation communities across the island. In 1978 she willed Mahamoku to the Nuhou Corporation, the nonprofit that cares for Grove Farm Homestead Museum in Lihue, ensuring the house would be preserved as part of Kauai’s living heritage.
During its documentation in 1987, Mahamoku was placed on the Hawaiʻi Register of Historic Places and nominated to the National Register — a well-deserved recognition of both the house and the Wilcox family’s deep roots on Kauai.
This 1987 historic record sheet (with its detailed site plan) beautifully captures the story of a place where family legacy, thoughtful design, and the natural beauty of Hanalei come together.
Hanalei Bay has inspired countless stories. Mahamoku is one of the loveliest — a quiet celebration of early 20th-century island living and the importance of preservation.
Have you explored the historic sites around Hanalei or visited the Waioli Mission District? We’d love to hear your thoughts or favorite memories in the comments below!
