As the only small-ship cruise line in Southeast Alaska offering both saltwater fishing and fly fishing excursions, The Boat Company gives our guests the chance to experience Alaska’s waters beyond just cruising on top of them.

Our aluminum skiffs allow us to navigate into remote bays, secluded shorelines and streams, and access spectacular fishing grounds that larger vessels don’t on their typical cruise routes and itineraries.

As a nonprofit, conservation-focused cruise line, sustainability is at the heart of how we explore the Tongass. We believe these incredible fisheries and wild places should remain healthy for generations to come, which means abiding by local regulations and practicing responsible fishing.

This week’s views from the wild side of Alaska.

From orcas paying our vessels a visit in the Inside Passage, to humpback whales breaching against the mountains, Southeast Alaska put on a show for trip 13’s passengers this week.

And the wildlife encounters didn’t stop at the ocean… guests spotted bears while hiking through the Tongass National Forest and even embraced one of our favorite traditions: a refreshing “moss facial” on an enchanting moss-covered island.

Days were spent getting off the vessel and into the wilderness! Hiking beneath towering old-growth trees, kayaking quiet coves, saltwater fishing from small skiffs, and fly fishing remote streams surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in Alaska.

With The Boat Company’s expedition-centered itineraries, we spent every day exploring the Tongass via kayak, onshore hike, stream-side while casting for salmon, or by skiffs on saltwater fishing excursions.

Over the course of 7 days, our passengers traveled hundreds of miles through the waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage to explore glacially-carved fjords, quiet coves, and the old-growth trees of the Tongass National Forest.

Along the way, our crew and passengers encountered brown and black bears foraging along remote shorelines, gray whales, dall’s porpoises, stellar sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, bald eagles, and countless other species during their daily excursions.

Our days were spent kayaking along remote coastlines, hiking through moss-covered old-growth rainforest, exploring muskegs, fly-fishing in wild streams, saltwater fishing from our skiffs, discovering intertidal ecosystems and venturing deep into the heart of wilderness areas few travelers ever reach.

In between it all? Educational naturalist presentations, incredible meals, birthday celebrations, icy polar plunges, whale watching from the bows of our vessels, and sunset dinners anchored in the still waters of Southeast Alaska’s hidden bays.

You never know what you might discover during a kayaking excursion 🐋

Along with kayaking, our itineraries offer opporunities for saltwater fishing, fly-fishing, hiking, skiff tours and more! We recommend trying everything at least once during our charters, especially since the wildlife in Alaska could appear anywhere at any moment.

These are the moments worth stopping the engines for! See the whale activity our passengers have been experiencing in Southeast Alaska this summer while cruising through the Tongass National Forest.

Every summer, humpback whales migrate from the warm tropical waters of Hawaii to the waters of the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska to feed on herring, krill, and salmon fry. They also exhibit some behaviors such as:

Lobtailing: When they slap their tails on the surface of the water
Fluking: When they bend and dive down into the ocean exposing their tails
And Breaching: Jumping completely out of the water!

These are just a few of the countless humpback whale encounters our guests experience onboard!
