Meet Mouse.

He’s a powerhouse that just does his job. Not the top of the herd like his brother Mac, but he holds his own and doesn’t let the younger ones push him around.

Mouse was started by Gary and has spent years doing ranch work before carrying clients through the backcountry. A lot of folks who ride him end up calling him Moose.

He’s steady, kind, and the kind of horse you’re always glad to have under you.

Morning at Grizzly Creek.

The mist settles in the valley below camp, the river just starting to show through, and everything is still for a little while before the day begins.

It’s one of those views you don’t forget once you’ve seen it.

How many steaks do you think Duane cooked over the years?

Were you lucky enough to have one?

There’s a lot of Black Otter history in moments like this. Back in camp, after a long day, with something good cooking and everyone gathered around.

Meet Gus.

He’s one of our favorites, and he’s not shy about it. Gus will walk right up to you and lean in for a scratch with that big forehead of his.

As the biggest mule in the string, he’s the one we trust with the heavy loads. He’s steady on the trail and has learned (mostly) how to give the trees a little extra space when he needs it.

He is rideable… although we’ve never tried. You’d probably need a ladder to get on!

Heading up Wallace Pass. Nearly 10,000 feet and a long way from the nearest trailhead.

This is the kind of travel that defines a Black Otter summer trip. Not rushed. Not crowded. Just good horses, amazing views, and big country.

Meet Mac! Mac is the alpha of the bunch, so he goes bossing everyone around. Many of you have probably ridden Mac on your trips.

He was started by Gary and is owned by Gary and Nika's daughter Bailey. Big and stout, he has seen many miles of Montana backcountry and has been a key horse for our clients.
