There’s so much more room on the streets for city living when your delivery vehicles are small, your cars are small, you’ve got plenty of bike lanes & public transit & sidewalks.

The journey to this tram: Taxi to train. Train to LIRR. LIRR to Airtain. Plane to Milan. Air shuttle to train. Subway to train. Train to Verona. Train to Mantua. Walk 100km. Taxi to high speed train. Train from Reggio to Milan. Subway into city. More walking. Tram time!

The US in general is so behind the times. Small liberal cities even are lightyears behind Europe. This small Italian city that dwarfs Providence has figured out recycling & composting while we still struggle.

In the few hours I’ve been here I’ve enjoyed the wonders of trains, trains & more trains. Bike lanes. Buses. Dense shops and narrow streets. Recycling & energy conservation. It breaks my heart how much time and money the US wastes arguing that the status quo is OK. We need to stop electing RI politicians who promise little & deliver less.

Could that car get any closer to that parent biking w/their kids? Props to them for bracing the city streets by bike. Boo to cars that drive too close. This example is precisely why we’re driving to get our kid from school instead of biking. Lloyd Ave has multiple schools on it & near it but there’s no east/west bike lane for miles on the East Side. We, like most people, want bike lanes before we feel safe to bike in the city.

Mayor Smiley killed all East Side bike lane projects as one of his 1st orders of business when 1st elected. Why doesn’t he want kids to safely bike to school? His anti-bike lane policies harm families, harm kids & harm businesses.

Since runs so infrequently now due to budget cuts, Hope HS students are often waiting a long time to catch a bus home after school. The 1 bus only runs every 20 minutes!

I’ve seen students sitting on the curb waiting as there’s no where to sit or chill while they wait. There were easily 10+ kids sitting on asphalt as there was nothing else for them.

I already flagged this to but would love to find a way to get at least a few benches or a purpose made spot on Hope HS lawn for students to use while they wait for their ride home.

How long does it take to walk from the East Side of Providence to cross N Main St and Canal St via Smith St? The total distance is around 280 feet.

As you’ll notice, there’s not crosswalks on both sides of Smith St to cross N Main and Canal. So you need to zig zag back and forth to safely cross.

What was your guess? Was it almost 3 minutes? Because that’s how long it took my family waiting for signals to go from the corner by Station Row apts over and across to the Episcopal Diocese.

For those good at math, that’s more than 3x longer than it takes to walk this distance without impediments. Missing crisswalks, short walk signal cycles and long demayed walk signals turn a 1 minute street crossing into a 3 minute journey.

It may not seem like much to complain about, but if you’re going to miss your train, you’re not waiting 3 mins at these crosswalks. Your crossing where there are no crosswalks.

Its just another example of Providence failing to care for residents. The streets to take to walk to a major transit hub should be designed for pedestrians to take. Yet they’re not.

This intersection is split between Ward 3 & Ward 12. State RIDOT maintains Smith St and the north part of Canal St.

It’s pothole season & lots of snow is melting. So its even more glaring where it still hasn’t melted from sidewalks & bike lanes around Providence.

The blizzard was last month, but as of Sunday, almost 2 weeks after the snow stopped, Providence had still yet to clear all of its own sidewalks.

The snow blocking the sidewalk at a city park and along a school sidewalk is a huge middle finger to elderly residents, parents w/strollers & students who use these travelways daily.

They’ve raised this middle finger repeatedly.

These specific spots were missed in January & other times. Yet, despite raising the issue & submitting 311s, Smiley’s admin struggles with fixing mistakes & learning from them.
