First up in the shop: blocks! ⚓️

After every sailing season, each block gets taken apart, inspected, and given a little TLC! From checking the inner workings to making repairs and replacing worn parts, we make sure everything is in good working order before putting them back together and giving them a fresh coat of paint.

These blocks play an important role in raising, lowering, and adjusting our sails, so keeping them in good shape is a big part of our winter maintenance!

Now for a little trivia… Any guesses on how many blocks the Riggin uses? 👀

Doing a little rig work while the weather is still nice! ☀️⚓️

All of our cables and masts get a thorough inspection and some much-needed TLC before winter sets in. We’ll give you a closer look at the process soon, so stay tuned!

The anchors are finally off, and even the helm gets brought back to the shop for safekeeping! There’s not much that stays on the Riggin during downrig, and every piece gets a little TLC before next season!

The Cover: Part 2!

Now that the framework is built, it’s time to wrap her up for winter!

We cover the entire structure in shrink wrap and tape everything along her sides to make sure it’s secure. Once everything is in place, we go around with a heat gun to shrink the wrap until it’s nice and tight!

This helps create a strong, protective cover that can stand up to Maine’s winter weather and keep the Riggin safe and dry until spring!

And of course, we can’t forget her bowsprit! Make sure you stay tuned to see how we prep her masts to keep them protected all winter long!

And now for the final construction of downrig: The Cover!

While most boats are hauled out of the water and stored on land for the winter, the Riggin actually stays right at her dock!

To keep her protected during the colder months, we build a custom cover over her deck. The cover was made specifically for the Riggin and is constructed in sections that are easy enough to take apart each spring, but sturdy enough to withstand Maine’s winter storms!

It’s one of the last big projects of downrig and an important part of keeping the Riggin safe and cozy until sailing season returns!

When we downrig, we usually take everything down from one mast at a time! There absolutely is a method to the madness, and for speed and efficiency, working on one mast and then the other is the best way to get the job done.

There’s always a lot of communication and teamwork involved, and safety is our top priority! After all, these block-and-tackle systems hold our sails up all summer long, and they’re pretty hefty pieces of equipment!
