Returning this year we have Erik! We asked him some questions about his favorite parts of windjamming:

What was your favorite place we visited from last year?

“I would have to say my favorite place we visited last season was Somes Sound. It was a lifelong dream of mine to sail up a Fjord(technically it’s a fjard but I am counting it) and last season it finally came true. It was absolutely stunning.”

What are you most looking forward to this season?

“I have to say that the thing I am looking forward to the most this season is our wonderful schooner community. It takes a very special type of person to work on these amazing historic ships. And it takes a very special type of person to seek out this type of once in a lifetime experience. From my crew mates new and old, to passengers both returners and first timers, I cannot wait to see what 2025 has in store. ( Also, I have not been able to find a decent NY style bagel this entire winter after being spoiled by Chef Jocelyn’s all last season, and I cannot wait for our first bagel morning!)”

Next up we have Lauren!

“It’s said in sailing that “the best course isn’t always the most direct.” And in many ways, the course I’ve set to the J&E Riggin hasn’t been direct, but it’s sure been a great adventure. Since graduating from Clemson in 2022, I’ve walked a 500 mile pilgrimage through Europe, worked as a safari guide in Africa, taught skiing in Utah and scooped ice cream in New Zealand. And while these experiences may seem disparate, each has given me a deep appreciation for the natural world around us and sharing the wonders of the world with others.   That’s what I’m looking forward to this season—from puffins to puffy clouds to puffs of wind, the Maine coast has endless wonders for us all to appreciate. I’m looking forward to sharing them all with our guests!”

Let’s do some crew introductions! First off we have Rachel💪⛵️

“I grew up in Utah where I developed a love for the outdoors by hiking, backpacking, and rock climbing. I studied biology and geology in college, with a one-year study abroad in Hawai’i to study marine science. It was there that I got my first taste of sailing—on a hand crafted traditional va’a sailing canoe. A few years later, during my last semester at college, I signed up on a whim for a fun elective class that took her on board a tall ship in Southern California for 4 days. What I thought would be a fun way to get a college credit ended up touching me deeply. I fell in love with the ship, and sailing, and reignited her passion for the ocean. I couldn’t wait to get back on the water after I graduated, and have been sailing ever since. I’ve sailed on the West Coast, all over the East Coast, and in the Caribbean. Everywhere I have sailed, I have heard about Maine and the amazing sailing in the Penobscot Bay, so I am excited to experience that. In my free time, I enjoy writing stories, playing guitar, and board games.”
