Let’s take a moment to admire the anhinga, a bird we regularly see on our cruises, as they're year-round residents of Florida. Their feathers are less water-resistant than other birds, which helps them swim underwater, where they spear small fish, shrimp, amphibians, crayfish, and young alligators or snakes with their beak. You can often spot them perched above the water with their wings stretched out as they dry their feathers.

10 Interesting Facts About the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum

⚓️ The current lighthouse tower was built between 1871-1874 and is the oldest surviving brick structure in St. Augustine

⚓️ The site was restored starting in 1980 after decades of preservation efforts by the Junior Service League of St. Augustine

⚓️ Visitors climb 219 steps to reach the top of the 165-foot tower

⚓️ It’s considered one of the most haunted sites in St. Augustine, linked to the 1873 tragedy of The Pittee Girls

⚓️ In 1885, the lighthouse lamp was converted from lard oil to kerosene

⚓️ The lighthouse still functions today as an active aid to navigation

⚓️ The museum grounds include the Tin Pickle, a World War II-themed hot dog stand located in a restored Coast Guard Jeep garage

⚓️ Children under 44 inches and non-service animals are not allowed in the tower

⚓️ It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981

⚓️ The tower contains a Fresnel lens made in Paris by Sautter, Lemonnier & Company

On Saturday, October 3rd, climb aboard the Great Blue Heron for a festive fall cruise featuring a guided tasting of six craft b**rs, including seasonal and fall favorites inspired by Oktoberfest. Sip your way through a variety of brews while cruising the beautiful waterways of St. Augustine and learning a little about each b**r along the way.

To complete the experience, each guest will enjoy an Oktoberfest-inspired snack box featuring a soft pretzel, served with traditional mustard—the perfect pairing for your fall b**r flight. At Florida Water Tours, sparking curiosity and creating “oh, wow!” moments for children and young adults is at the core of who we are. Most of our cruises have an educational component to help people develop a deep appreciation of our marine life and delicate coastal ecosystem.

Our nonprofit organization, Florida Water Warriors, will be hosting Marine Field Experiences over the next few months. This 90-minute science boat tour is family-friendly and all proceeds go back to our marine science educational programming for students in our community.
