As July begins, we’re approaching monsoon season! This period of seasonal wind direction shifts, leads to an increased amount of expected precipitation. The monsoon season typically lasts until mid-September. During this time, we may see an increase in afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
When these showers do occur, be on the look-out for waterfalls that pop up between the canyon walls! (pictured here). These waterfalls typically do not last long and will eventually feed into the Virgin River that runs the length of Zion Canyon.
With monsoon season also comes flash flooding. Flash floods are powerful, hard to predict, and can be damaging very quickly. They are an increase of the depth and speed of a waterway, due to heavy rains.
If you are planning a trip to Zion, familiarize yourself with the flash flood rating scale, signs to look for in the event of a flash flood, and what to do if you find yourself in a flash flood. At the end of the day, safety is your responsibility. Recreate safely!
