šŸ»šŸŽø LAJAM IS BACK, BABY.

You know fall is creeping into Joetown when Ann + Shawn Riesner are getting ready to throw one hell of a party at the LaPlayette.

LaJam started years ago with former owner Mark Zimmer, and when Ann and Shawn took over the La, they brought it back—and kept it going. This Friday marks YEAR EIGHT of music, friends, family and a whole lotta love for this little downtown of ours.

And because a good party is even better when it does some good: LaJam proudly partners with the St. Joseph Fire Department and has raised more than $25,000 for the St. Joseph Fire Relief Fund over the years. šŸ”„ā¤ļø

So grab your people, head downtown and help us send summer out LOUD.

IN GOOD COMPANY: Hansen & Company Woodworks

In 2004, Adam Hansen needed a job.

He found 2,000 square feet to rent, borrowed $8,000 to buy a table saw, a miter box, and a handful of tools, and started building fireplace surrounds for a local developer.

As the project moved along, Adam asked if he could build the cabinets, too.
There was just one problem: He'd never built a cabinet before.

So he bought flat-packed cabinet parts from another shop, took them apart piece by piece, figured out how they fit together, and taught himself the craft.
Twenty-two years later, that same willingness to learn is still at the heart of who Adam is. He doesn't believe passion is where success starts. He believes it starts with curiosity—the willingness to give something everything you've got, to learn, improve, and keep showing up. In his words, curiosity helps you build knowledge. Knowledge breeds passion, and passion creates joy.

But make no mistake: Adam will be the first to tell you you have to put in the work, too. ā€œThere’s no golden ticket. It doesn’t exist. It’s in the daily boring where champions are born, and where the vision comes to life.ā€

If there's a better way to do something, he'll keep looking for it. He'll tour hundreds of manufacturing facilities, revise a factory layout more than 80 times, and head back to the drawing board as many times as it takes until the numbers finally work.

Not because someone else expects it. Because he does.

Today, Hansen & Company Woodworks employs people right here in St. Joseph and is preparing to open HCo 2.0, North America's first fully automated frameless batch-one cabinet line. But if you ask Adam what excites him most, it isn't the technology. It's what that technology makes possible. At its best, automation creates more room for people to succeed, not less. It should elevate the work that humans do by tackling the low-level, repetitive tasks and creating more space for workers to problem-solve and innovate.

"The cabinets are just the vehicle," Hansen said.

What really matters to Adam is creating opportunities for people to build meaningful careers, earn good wages, raise their families, and create lives they are proud of without having to leave the central Minnesota communities they love. ā€œIf we can pull that off, that’s community doing what it’s supposed to do.ā€

On July 23, Hansen & Company opened the doors to HCo 2.0 and invited the community inside for an epic open house! Adam hopes people won't just see a new manufacturing facility. He hopes they'll walk away believing something bigger—that American manufacturing is alive and well, and that innovation doesn't have to happen somewhere else. It can happen right here in St. Joseph. Way to go Adam!!!

šŸ” **IN GOOD COMPANY: THE HERNS**
Meet the family behind The House Food & Tap

Before there was The House Food & Tap, there was a family that simply fell in love with St. Joseph.

BriAnne Hern's story started just down the road. Born in St. Joseph and raised in Little Falls, she returned in 1996 to attend the College of Saint Benedict, where she was a six-time All-MIAC Conference athlete. What began as a college experience quietly became the place she would build her life. As BriAnne puts it, she feels like she never really left.

Craig's journey was a little longer. He grew up on a cattle ranch in Alberta, Canada, where hard work wasn't optional—it was simply part of everyday life. His family still operates the ranch today, and the Herns continue to help whenever they can. After his baseball career ended in the early 2000s, Craig found his way to St. Joseph, never imagining that this small Minnesota town would one day become home.

Today, they're raising four children just one mile from The House. Their oldest two now attend St. John's University, and if you've ever stopped in for a meal, you've probably met a member of the Hern family. Everyone pitches in—making pizzas, greeting guests, bussing tables, washing dishes, and doing whatever needs to be done. It's truly a family business.

When Craig and BriAnne opened The House in March 2025, they weren't simply opening a restaurant. They were investing in the community that had given so much to their family.

Instead of building a traditional restaurant, they chose a food hall model that gives local food entrepreneurs a chance to test ideas, grow their businesses, and pursue their dreams with a little less risk. It's an idea that has already earned statewide recognition with the Minnesota Economic Development Association's Project of the Year Award, but if you ask the Herns what they're proudest of, it isn't the trophy.

It's watching someone else's dream come to life.

That says a lot about who they are.

BriAnne told us they hope people leave feeling like they've found "St. Joseph's living room." A place where students, neighbors, families, and visitors all feel welcome. A place where conversations happen over pizza, friendships are built around shared tables, and local businesses lift one another up instead of competing for a bigger slice.

Maybe that's why The House feels like such a natural fit in Joetown. It reflects the very best parts of this community: opening your door, pulling up another chair, and believing that when one neighbor succeeds, we all do.

Thank you, Craig, BriAnne, and the entire Hern family for choosing to invest your lives—not just your business—in St. Joseph. We're grateful you're part of the Joetown story. ā¤ļø

Gather up the family and head to The House, where there truly is something for everyone! Besides - cooking, in this heat?? See you there!

Big news for Joetown: we officially have our FIRST VRBO rental space! šŸŽ‰šŸ”

Located below St. Joseph Health and Wellness heart of downtown, this beautifully renovated space was created by Julia Krengel with visitors in mind — and honestly, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your stay.

The rental features two cozy bedrooms, an open kitchen + living space perfect for gathering, and a gorgeous outdoor patio that’s just begging for morning coffee, late-night w**e chats, or a slow summer evening under the lights.

And the best part? You’re steps away from EVERYTHING.

Walk to Joetown’s incredible restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, bars, shopping, trails, and events. Whether you’re visiting your college kid, biking the Wobegon Trail, planning a girls’ weekend, grabbing dinner at one of our world-class restaurants, or just looking to experience small-town Minnesota at its absolute best — this is the spot.

This feels like such a huge step for St. Joseph. We’ve needed more places for visitors to stay, gather, and fully experience what makes this town special. And hopefully, this inspires even more beautiful short-term rentals in the future so more people can fall in love with Joetown the way we have. ā¤ļø

Trust us… once you stay here, you’ll get it. Here is the link to the rental - share it with friends that plan to visit!
