Mary Shields, the first woman to complete the Iditarod, dies at age 80.

Even more than 50 years after her historic ride, Mary Shields was still inspiring the next generation of female mushers. Shields, the first woman to finish the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, died earlier this week in Fairbanks at age 80. She was remembered as an amiable Alaskan whose love for her dogs and adventure outpaced her inclination to race. Shields finished 23rd in the 1974 Iditarod, a spot ahead of Lolly Medley, to secure her spot as the first woman to finish the race. RIP

Denali National Park and Preserve officials confirmed that the park road will be opened to private vehicles as far as Mile 30 on Friday.

Most of this year’s Iditarod route is fine. Its first leg is an open question. In spite of low snow across much of Alaska, most of this year’s upcoming Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race will proceed as usual along the course’s southern route. But one high-visibility section of the event, the Sunday restart on Willow Lake where teams officially set off on the race, might have to be substantially changed up.

The Parks Highway was closed in both directions north of Cantwell on Friday after debris from an avalanche crossed the roadway.

The avalanche at Mile 219 closed the Parks Highway as of 10 a.m. Friday, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. Crews were working through the day to clear 6-foot-deep debris from the road and mitigate slide risks, and the state transportation department said it anticipated reopening the highway around 11 p.m., citing “unanticipated rock that came down in the avalanche fall” as a reason for the extended closure.

Seward excited for return of regular air service to Anchorage. For the first time in over 20 years, Seward will soon have scheduled air service from Anchorage.

When the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2002 dropped the city from its Essential Air Service (EAS) program, they left the door open for reinstatement in the future, which is what happened earlier this year.
