On October 30, 1735, John Adams, America's second president, was born just outside Boston, Massachusetts.

Adams helped lead the fight for American independence, played a major role in drafting the Declaration of Independence, and became the first president to live in the White House.

And here's a fascinating piece of history! Adams died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Even more remarkable? His longtime friend and political rival, Thomas Jefferson, died on the very same day!

Today, you can pay your respects to Adams at the historic United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts, better known as the "Church of the Presidents."

Adams is buried there alongside his wife, Abigail, their son, President John Quincy Adams, and his wife, Louisa Catherine. It's the only church in America where two U.S. presidents are buried.

If you love presidential history, Quincy is well worth a visit! You can also explore the Adams family's historic homes at nearby Adams National Historical Park.

Effigy Mounds National Monument in eastern Iowa was established on October 25, 1949. We recently visited Effigy Mounds National Monument. The park features ancient earth mounds built by Native Americans more than a thousand years ago, many shaped like animals such as bears and birds. It’s a beautiful place to hike, learn, and connect with early American history. We did a loop that took us past Little Bear Mound, Great Bear Mound, and Fire Point Mounds. https://www.roamyourhome.com/effigy-mounds-national-monument-sacred-trails-and-ancient-earthworks/

On this day in 1781, British General Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, giving Washington and the American forces a decisive win that effectively ended the Revolutionary War.

Today, you can still stand where history happened — from the soaring Yorktown Victory Monument to the earthworks where the final siege closed in, to the cave where Cornwallis is said to have hidden as defeat loomed.
