What To Say When Conversations With Your Teen Get Messy⬇️

🔷"That didn't feel good. What was your intention?"
🔹This phrase opens a door for the other person to explain their perspective. It often diffuses tension fast.

🔷"I'm feeling defensive. Can you share that in another way?"
🔹This acknowledges your own emotional state without placing blame. It keeps the conversation open instead of shutting it down.

🔷"When you said that, I thought it meant [fill in the blank]. Can you clarify?"
🔹This helps catch a misunderstanding before it spirals.

🔷"Are we working toward understanding or just trying to win?"
🔹This breaks the cycle of blame. It pulls both of you out of “who’s right” mode and reminds you to focus on resolution.

🔷"What can we both do to make this feel less hurtful?"
🔹This shifts the energy from finger-pointing to shared responsibility.
